Pioneers conclude day with 4-0 win over Mustangs

DENTON, Texas (April 14, 2018) - Texas Woman's University had a rough start in their series against Midwestern State as the Mustangs opened with a 10-2 win, but the Pioneers were able to finish the day with a 4-0 victory Saturday at Pioneer Field.

Midwestern State 10, Texas Woman's 2 (5 innings)

A Tara Solomon single up the middle marked the first TWU hit of the day in the first, and she advanced to second on an MSU error. A Jordan Kisselburg single to left center brought in Solomon for a 1-0 Pioneer advantage.

The Mustangs placed on runner on third due to a TWU error, and with two outs counted, MSU tied the game with an RBI single up the middle. The Mustangs tacked on four more runs in the inning with a pair of singles and a batter being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 5-1 lead.

Lindy Kennedy singled to right field in the bottom of the inning with Puempel and Sylestine on base, but Sylestine was caught out at home for the third out.

The Mustangs had another big inning in the fifth with five more runs that began with three consecutive doubles. A home run to left field accounted for two of the runs and put MSU ahead, 10-1.

Sylestine and Kisselburg each notched hits in the bottom of the fifth to keep the Pioneers alive, and Kennedy singled to right field to score Sylestine before a final ground out ended game number one.

Abby Walker (10-8) took the loss with four strikeouts and three walks.

Texas Woman's 4, Midwestern State 0

Kennedy was the first player to reach scoring position in the game as she made it to first on a wild pitch in the second inning and advanced to third on a groundout, but she was left stranded on a strike out.

The Mustangs loaded the bases in the third on a pair of singles and a TWU throwing error, but the Pioneer defense recorded three straight outs to hold MSU scoreless.

MaKayla Cook was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth, and Avery Williams took a walk to push her to second. A walk to Sylestine filled the bases before a single to second base by Puempel scored Cook for the first run of the contest. Kisselburg brought two in with a single to right center, and an RBI from Kennedy handed the Pioneers a 4-0 lead.

Neither team garnered a hit the remainder of the game as TWU was able to take the victory.

Cheyenne Mahy (10-5) earned the win with five hits on six strikeouts.

Head Coach Genny Stidham said, "We need to be competitors and cut down on the repeated mistakes."
