PORTALES, New Mexico (Jan. 24, 2019) — An Ajine Taylor three-point play with nine seconds left in overtime looked to give Texas Woman's the victory over Eastern New Mexico. That was until a foul was called against the Pioneers with .2 seconds remaining, giving the Greyhounds the go-ahead free throws to capture the 79-78 win.
"I'm incredibly proud of our grit and competitiveness for 45 minutes," head coach
Beth Jillson said. "We were relentless on the boards and did a great job sharing the basketball and getting high-percentage shots."
Trailing by as many as 10 minutes midway through the third quarter, the Pioneers, who outrebounded the Greyhounds 55-33, battled to take a three-point lead with 26 seconds left. A Greyhound three-pointer would tie the game at 68-68, forcing the Pioneers to play in their second straight overtime game.
"I'm impressed with how our players have stepped up and responded to added expectations," Jillson stated.
London Archer led the way with 24 points and eight rebounds while
KJ Stastny dropped 16 points, 11 boards and six assists.
Macy Wilkerson added 20 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals before fouling out at the end of regulation.
"Moving forward, we need to clean up the turnovers and be ready to battle on Saturday," she added.
The Pioneers will head back on the road to face nationally ranked West Texas A&M on Saturday at 2 p.m.
