DENTON (Feb. 16, 2019) — A different Texas Woman's Basketball team greeted Tarleton State on Saturday than the one they met last month. The Pioneers battled down to the wire against the TexAnns, only to fall 58-57.
It was a festive day at Kitty Magee Arena, that saw former TWU Basketball student-athletes returning for Alumni Day and current Pioneers wearing pink for cancer awareness and the Play-4-Kay Foundation.
"We talked about playing for something that's bigger than ourselves," head coach
Beth Jillson said regarding the team dawning pink uniforms. "There's a bigger fight that people have to go through. The fact that we can come out here and raise money and awareness. It's a special day and it means a lot to our team and our program."
In front of dinstinguished TWU Basketball alumni,
Carissa Moody picked up her 12th double-double of the season with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds while
Ma'K'La Woods posted 14 points, on an efficient 7-of-8 shooting from the field, and eight rebounds.
"It's always so much fun to see (the alumni)," Jillson added. "They laid the foundation and the legacy for our program."
Macy Wilkerson added 11 points as she connected on three of her four three-point attempts as the Pioneers controlled the boards, holding a 46-27 edge while holding the TexAnns to under 37 percent shooting from the field.
"I'm so proud of our defensive effort, holding (Tarleton State) to 58 points," head coach
Beth Jillson said. "We really battled on the boards, I thought we were relentless."
Next week, the Pioneers will hit the road for the final road trip of the season, beginning on Thursday when they face Cameron at 5:30 p.m.
