DENTON (Feb. 28, 2019) — Despite holding the top team in the Lone Star Conference to their lowest point total of the season, Texas Woman's fell to No. 18 West Texas A&M 59-47 on Thursday night at Kitty Magee Arena.
"I thought we had a valiant defensive effort," head coach
Beth Jillson said. "We just were really locked in; playing connected and playing together."
The Pioneers jumped out early, taking a one-point lead into the second quarter. It was in the third quarter that the Lady Buffs created separation, outscoring the Pioneers 18-9. In the fourth, the Pioneers held WT to only eight points, but couldn't capitalize, scoring only nine points of their own.
Leading the way for the Pioneers was
Carissa Moody who logged 15 points and seven boards.
Ma'K'La Woods would also produce an efficient game, scoring 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
Senior
KJ Stastny added nine points and four assists while
Kam Daily posted four points on 50 percent shooting from the field off the bench.
With Texas A&M-Kingsville and Western New Mexico losing on Thursday night as well, the Pioneers clinch a postseason berth.
"It's definitely good to be in and to know that we have a spot," Jillson said. "Anything can happen in March, which is a lot of fun."
Saturday, the Pioneers will look to lock the No. 7 seed in the Lone Star Conference when they host Eastern New Mexico on Senior Day.
