DENTON (March 15, 2019) — An eighth inning RBI-double to left center field from
Paige Tamayo propelled Texas Woman's to a 2-1 victory over Tarleton State on Friday night.
"It was a gritty performance," head coach
Amber Barker said. "We played well on defense and Bailey (Turner) did an excellent job in the circle. We did what we needed to do. [I'm] super proud of the entire team."
Following a
Tylia Sylestine double and a sacrifice bunt by
Avery Williams in the top of the first, Tamayo punched the first run of the game with an RBI groundout to second.
In the circle, Turner kept the TexAnns off the board through 6.2 innings as the Pioneers held the 1-0 lead throughout most of the game.
"I just wanted to go out, compete and do my best for my team," Turner said following the game.
The junior would pick up her third win of the season as she allowed just one-earned run on seven hits while tallying a pair of strikeouts.
In the bottom of the eighth, the combination of Sylestine and Tamayo once again delivered. After Sylestine connected on a one-out single,
Krista Cuevas came in to pinch run where she stole second before Tamayo came up to the plate.
"With a runner on second, I knew I had to do my job," Tamayo said. "Bailey had one heck of game, so I just wanted to come out and produce for my team."
Tamayo and Sylestine accounted for all four of the Pioneer hits, tallying two apiece.
The Pioneers and the TexAnns will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
