Softball drops two in series finale against Aggies

DENTON (April 12, 2019) — With members of the 1979 National Champions in attendance, Texas Woman's dropped Friday's twin bill to Cameron, dropping Game 1, 9-1, before falling in the nightcap 4-1.

"We had opportunities," head coach Amber Barker said. "Our fight was much better, we tried to be discipline, we showed up and really tried to bring it."

After conceding a run in the top of the first of Game 1, the Pioneers struck with an equalizer in the lead-off at-bat in the bottom of the inning when Tylia Sylestine blasted a solo homer to centerfield.

That would be the only offense the Pioneers would muster the rest of the game as Sylestine would finish 2-for-4 at the plate with Taylor Goulet and Sarah LaChance recording the other two hits.

Between games, the members of the 1979 TWU Softball team were recognized, celebrating the 40th anniversary of their national championship.

"It was great to have them out here," Barker said. "To hear them talk about their legacy and to see them, it was an honor to recognize them and be on the same field as them.

Game 2 followed with a similar script with the Aggies jumping out to an early lead. Late in the ballgame, the Pioneers found success getting runners aboard only to finish the ballgame leaving nine on base.

Paige Tamayo and Avery Williams each finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate while Makayla Cook connected on the only RBI of the game in the sixth inning.

The Pioneers will head to West Texas for the final road series of the regular season next week before returning home for the season finale.
