COMMERCE, Texas -
Paige Tamayo went deep for the fifth time this season, powering the Texas Woman's University softball team in the second game of the doubleheader, but the Pioneers (5-11, 0-2 Lone Star Conference) were unable to overcome the late offense of the No. 16 Texas A&M-Commerce Lions (11-4, 2-0), falling 9-0 and 5-4 on Wednesday.
The Lions held TWU to two hits in the opening game, but the nightcap proved to be an entirely different story as Tamayo's first-inning longball capitalized on a TAMUC error and gave the Pioneers an early 2-0 advantage.
The Lions knotted the game in the bottom of the first and scored a pair of runs in the second inning to pull ahead 4-2, but TWU rallied in the fourth and fifth innings, as
Krista Cuevas and
Tatum Stover both notched RBI doubles to knot the game at 4-4.
However, the sixth inning saw the Lions pull ahead on an infield single and an error. The Pioneers advanced the tying run to scoring position in the seventh, but were not able to plate the run and the Lions held on for the sweep.
Tamayo and Cook had a pair of hits on the afternoon, while
Sydney Johnson drew three walks to stretch her team-leading total to 11.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, March 1, facing UT Tyler in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader in Tyler, Texas. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
