"We continue to see team improvement against some of the top programs in our league," said head coach
Jeff Huebner. "
Bailey Wozniak,
Addison Mulroney and Cara all had their best match of the year respectively, and we got great contributions from our bench as well. We need to tighten up some of our side out progressions this week and continue to build off this as a foundation for long term success."
The two teams battled through the opening set. LCU claimed several modest leads throughout the set, however the Pioneers battled back each time to knot the set on five separate occasions, eventually claiming a 17-16 advantage. However, LCU responded with a 5-0 run to claim a 21-17 lead, and while TWU was able to narrow the gap to 21-20, TWU would get no closer in the set as LCU took the opening set 25-22.
TWU jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the second set, but LCU responded with a 6-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead at 8-6. The two teams played back-and-forth volleyball the entire set, playing through five set points before LCU was able to claim the 29-27 victory that gave the Lady Chaps a 2-0 match lead.
Both teams battled through the opening points in set three, with LCU grabbing an 11-7 advantage. However, the Pioneers responded by scoring 13 of the next 15 points to claim a 20-13 advantage. LCU reeled off four straight to pull to with 20-17, but would get no closer as TWU pulled to within 2-1 after the 25-20 victory.
The final set saw TWU jump ahead with five consecutive points to open play, but LCU battled back and claimed the lead for good at 15-14, keeping the Pioneers at arm's length down the stretch.
Yanely Pabon led TWU with 28 digs, while Mulroney (17) and Wozniak (10) also reached double figures.
TWU returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 19, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma in a non-conference matchup inside Kitty Magee Arena. A 6 p.m. match time is scheduled.
