Sadie Moyer turned in a 21-point performance,
Keslyn King added 11, while
Agang Tac grabbed 12 boards, but the Texas Woman's University basketball team could not hold off a late surge by the North Texas Mean Green, falling 76-62 on Thursday night inside the Super Pit.
The Pioneers opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter after a fast start, grabbing a 16-6 advantage after a 3-pointer by Moyer midway through the quarter. UNT fought back to knot the game at 18-18 with 1:35 to play, and the two teams traded baskets over the final 90 seconds to go into the second quarter tied at 20.
After UNT outscored TWU 19-9 in the second quarter to go into the half with a 39-29 advantage, the Pioneers chipped away at the lead throughout the third quarter to cut the deficit to two (53-51) going into the fourth quarter.
An
Ashley Ingram layup just over a minute into the quarter knotted the game at 53-53, and the freshman hit her second straight bucket 30 seconds later to give TWU its first lead since the first quarter at 55-53. The lead was short-lived, however, as UNT knotted the game on its next possession and pulled ahead with a pair of free throws; kickstarting a 19-5 run for the Mean Green that saw UNT push its lead to 14 (74-60) with 90 seconds to play.
While turnovers were relatively even, with TWU turning in 17 and UNT having 16, the Mean Green took greater advantage, outscoring the Pioneers 21-11 on turnovers. UNT held a 48-22 advantage in points in the paint and a 19-9 advantage in fast break points.
Ingram scored 10 points off the bench, while King dished out a team-high four assist. Moyer led TWU with nine drawn fouls.
There were four lead changes and five ties in the contest.
TWU opens the 2021-22 regular season on Friday, Nov. 12, hosting the Conference Challenge inside Kitty Magee Arena. TWU's season opener against Western Colorado will be played at 6 p.m.
