DENTON, Texas (Dec. 13, 2021) – Agang Tac played huge minutes for Texas Woman's University Monday night, setting three season highs with five blocks, three assists and 12 points, but the Pioneers fell, 63-60, to Texas A&M University – Commerce.
Tac, who transferred from Texas A&M – Commerce this season, flexed her strength against the Lions down the stretch of the game, proving to be a force in the paint. Tac went 6-11 from the field and added six rebounds to her stat sheet on Monday night.
Despite the fight every Pioneer showed in the 40 minutes of action, TWU (6-3) struggled to distance themselves throughout the game, which allowed undefeated Texas A&M – Commerce (9-0) to avoid being handed their first loss.
The Pioneers trailed 15-9 at the end of the first quarter, which fueled their fire to battle back in the second quarter. After going on a 6-0 run, the Pioneers cut the lead to two with six minutes left in the first half.
With two minutes left in the second quarter, TWU took their first lead of the game with a 15-foot jumper by
Keslyn King. Then, the Lions and Pioneers traded buckets to close the quarter, and the Lions went into halftime with a one-point advantage.
After having their nerves rocked a little, Texas A&M – Commerce came out of halftime slow, as TWU mounted a quick 4-0 to open the third quarter and cut the deficit to just three points.
Back-and-forth scoring seemed to be the simple summary of the night, with the Pioneers matching the scoring of a Lions team who typically averages 81 points per game.
In the final quarter of the night, the Pioneers cut the lead multiple times, getting within two or three points. They finally overcame the hump with 57 seconds left on the clock.
Ma'K'La Woods drew all the defenders into the paint, leaving
Sadie Moyer wide open in the corner for a three.
Ma'K'La Woods kicked it out and Moyer knocked down the huge shot.
The Pioneers played the foul game, and, to their advantage, the Lions went 1-of-2 from the line. With eight seconds on the clock, the Pioneers broke the press and had a look at the game-tying three but could not knock it down.
Although TWU was dealt a disappointing loss, their lock-down defense racked up many highlights and provided problems for Texas A&M – Commerce down the stretch.
The Lions committed 18 turnovers and shot just 18% from the 3-point line. TWU also held the Lions to just 63 points, their lowest score of the season.
Three Pioneers finished with 12 points on the night: Tac, Moyer, and
Brielle Woods. Ma'K"la Woods finshed with 10 points, and King added 8 points and one assist in the loss.
Continuing their homestand in KMA, the Pioneers will play against University of Texas – Tyler Monday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m.
