DENTON, Texas (Jan. 29, 2022) – The Texas Woman's University basketball team completed the week sweep today, defeating West Texas A&M University, 61-50.
Ashley Ingram led the way for the Pioneers with 15 points, marking her eighth consecutive game scoring 10 or more points.
Agang Tac joined the double digits club with 10 points off the bench.
TWU (12-5, 5-1 Lone Star Conference) handed West Texas A&M (12-9, 5-2) their second loss this week and second in LSC action.
The Pioneers never trailed in the game and the game was never tied, marking a wire-to-wire win for TWU.
The points in the paint battle was also owned by TWU. The Pioneers scored 32 points in the paint and West Texas A&M scored just 18.
After the tip, the Pioneers set the tone early and never took their foot of the gas pedal. In the first quarter, TWU outscored West Texas A&M 16-8.
Following their eight-point lead to start the second quarter, TWU continued to pour in the points. They hit their largest lead of the game, 19 points, on a buzzer beater jumper by
Ariyanna Hines to close the first half.
The Lady Buffs tried to chip away in the third quarter, by getting hot from the 3-point line, but TWU remained aggressive and found ways to hold the lead. When shots were not following, they got to the free throw line. They worked to grab every rebound and gave themselves second chance opportunities to score.
Sadie Moyer opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer for the Pioneers, which set the mood. Then,
Ashley Ingram got her own rebound and passed to
Keslyn King, who hit the jumper, to keep the crowd energized throughout the final quarter of action.
Ma'K'La Woods, who finished with nine points, scored four of the Pioneers last six points to put the bow on top of the win.
TWU's tenacity shone this afternoon down the stretch of the game, and the Pioneers flexed their depth this afternoon against the Lady Buffs, as eight Pioneers scored four or more points.
Ingram lead the defensive charge for the Pioneers with four steals and two blocks. Tac grabbed the most rebounds with seven.
To aid in the win, Moyer added nine points, King and
Brielle Woods had five, and
Kayla Glover and Hines scored four points.
The Pioneers are back in action Monday night against the University of Texas-Tyler in an LSC match-up on the road. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
