COMMERCE, Texas (Feb. 22, 2022) – A historical night on a historical day.
On "Twosday," Feb. 22, 2022, and Division II Day, the Texas Woman's University basketball team defeated No. 1 Texas A&M University – Commerce on the road 57-54.
"Tonight was a statement win," TWU head coach
Beth Jillson said. "This win and the fight we displayed shows who we are as a team. We knew it would a tough road game, but our team came prepared to give 110% in every single minute."
Yesterday, for the first time in program history, TAMUC (22-3, 10-3 Lone Star Conference) was voted No. 1 in the nation. Today, TWU (18-7, 11-3) beat the No. 1 team in the nation, marking the first win over a No. 1 ranked team in program history.
In the last week of regular season action for both the Pioneers and the Lions, the win set the tone for the teams in conference rankings, as TWU sat in fourth and TAMUC was in first heading into tonight's game. Both teams have two more games this week before the LSC championship is set.
"After we celebrate this win tonight, we are going to get some rest and prepare for our next two games," Jillson said. "We want to finish this week on a strong note."
In the first meeting between the teams, TAMUC beat TWU in Denton, Texas by three points on Dec. 13, 2021; however, the tables turned tonight, and the Pioneers defeated the Lions by three points.
The Pioneers held the Lions to their lowest score of the 2022 season at 54 and their lowest points in a quarter in the entire season, holding TAMUC to just seven in the second quarter.
TWU had an explosive start. In the first two minutes of action,
Scout Huffman hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 5-0 Pioneer run to start the game. Huffman scored 11 points in the first quarter to lead TWU to a 22-15 opening quarter.
For three quarters of action, TWU owned the advantage in the game. Their largest lead of the game was 14 points, after a free throw by
Ma'K'La Woods heading into halftime.
During the fourth quarter, the back-and-forth battle began. The Lions opened the final quarter on a 6-0 and took a one-point lead with five minutes left on the clock.
Ashley Ingram immediately answered and scored a lay-up to give the Pioneers the one-point advantage.
The trading buckets and nerve-wracking minutes continued. The score was tied at 52 with two minutes left. Then, the score was tied again at 54 with 1:29 on the clock. Ingram came up big in a clutch moment and scored a lay-up to put the Pioneers ahead by two with one minute in the game.
The Lions missed two free throws. Then, they missed the a shot on the next possession and fouled
Brielle Woods.
Brielle Woods went to the free throw line and went 1-for-2, which proved to be just the distance TWU needed to seal the 57-54 win.
Although the Pioneers hit some scoring droughts, their defense prevailed and led them to the win over TAMUC. TWU finished the game with eight steals and forced the Lions to commit 16 turnovers. The Lions also shot only 32.8% from the field and 25% from the 3-point line.
Tonight's win was a total team effort—seven different Pioneers scored and three scored in double figures.
Ingram recorded her fourth double-double of her career, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Huffman finished with 13 points and Moyer added 10 points.
Kayla Glover, who started her 11th game, came up big defensively down the stretch, drawing a huge charge. Glover finished with five points and four rebounds.
Agang Tac scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Brielle Woods and
Ma'K'La Woods rounded out the TWU box score with three points each.
The Pioneers were best in class in converting fast break points, scoring 18 points to the Lions five, which proved to be a big difference maker in the game.
TWU will close their regular season this week at home in Kitty Magee Arena. In their first game of the homestand, the Pioneers will play Oklahoma Christian Thursday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.
