OKLAHOMA CITY (March 19, 2022) – The Texas Woman's University STUNT team's historical first season came to close in their final tournament of 2022 at Oklahoma City University on March 18-19.
TWU played one game on Friday night against the host OCU, losing 13-5. Then, on Saturday, the Pioneers played three games.
At 12:30 p.m., the Pioneers played William Jessup University. The Pioneers scored four points but fell 18-4. Then, TWU continued their trend of scoring in the second game against Vanguard University, scoring one point to Vanguard's 19.
In their final game of the 2022 season, the Pioneers showcased their skills and overall season growth. They scored four points in the game, but they lost to Maryville University 21-4.
"This team of 14 girls took on a new sport, skill building, injuries and didn't let anything stop them," TWU head coach
Jasmine Owens said. "Comparing today's performance to our preseason showcase improvement shows exponential growth, and I couldn't be prouder."
In their season of competition, the Pioneers recorded their first program win and scored their most points in program history in their 15-1 performance Connors State College on Feb. 26
The Pioneers also scored in every game of the season, except for one.
Most of all, Owens said she is proud of the foundation and culture the first team created.
"They never shied away from the challenges and created a culture where everyone is pushed to become the best version of themselves on and off the mat," Owens said.
Following their first season, the Pioneers will only graduate one senior—captain
Stratton Stiefvater.
"I'm so thankful to our senior and captain Stratton for her amazing leadership in her first and last year," Owens said.
The Pioneers have already announced three new additions to the 2022-23 squad and are ready to continue making history in year two next season.
