PIONEERS FALL IN HOME OPENER TO OKLAHOMA BAPTIST

DENTON, Texas (Sept. 1, 2022) – While the rain held out for the Texas Woman's soccer team on Thursday, the muddy state of Pioneer Soccer Park saw intense action between TWU and Oklahoma Baptist. Despite their second half effort, the Pioneers lost 2-0 to OBU.

TWU (0-2-1) hosted their first game at Pioneer Soccer Park of 2022. Despite potential weather delays, the game went on as planned. OBU (1-2) managed to record their first win of 2022 in Denton.

While the mud and rain resulted in some slower ball movement and heavy feet, the Pioneers attacked with energy. In the match, the Pioneers out shot the Bison 19-7, while the Bison won the shot on goal contest, 7-1.

TWU's lone shot on goal came from Keely Chapman in the second half, when the Pioneers were trying to see something go in the net. Along with Chapman's look, Annie Boon recorded a shot that narrowly missed wide in the second half as well. The Pioneers were moving into the attacking third well and getting looks, but were unable to connect.

The Bison scored both goals in the first half, just six minutes apart at the 23rd minute mark and 29th minute mark.

The Pioneers starting goalkeeper Morgan Sherman lead the game in saves, recording five saves in the game.

Freshman Bri Luna led the Pioneers in shots with six, a personal career high for Luna. In the second half, Luna was able to break down the defense and get close to the net with some fancy footwork but was unable to connect.

Head Coach Babak Abouzar said though the loss was tough, the Pioneers are ready to bounce back with a result on Sunday.

"Tough loss today, but I'm proud of how our team kept battling," Abouzar said. "Our ideas in the final third were spot on, but we just have to continue to work on our execution. We have a few players out due to injuries; however, this is a great time for others to step up and put their stamp on the game. We will regroup and get ready for Midwestern on Sunday."

The Pioneers home stand was short-lived however, as they go back on the road this weekend. TWU will travel to Wichita Falls, Texas to take on Lone Star Conference opponent Midwestern State in a nonconference match up on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
