DENTON, Texas (Sept. 21, 2022) – Despite the score being knotted at zeros for a majority of the match, the Texas Woman's soccer team fell 1-0 to Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Soccer Park.
TWU (1-5-2, 1-1-1) played an aggressive offensive match, recording 13 shots and five shots on goal, yet they were unable to connect with the back of the net.
ENMU (3-5, 1-2) managed to break through the scoreless standstill at the 74th minute of action.
On a high temperature day in Denton, the Pioneers channeled all the extra energy they could, battling to the final minute to try and connect on an offensive opportunity.
"I felt we were a bit unlucky today," TWU head coach
Babak Abouzar said. "We created some really good opportunities, especially in the second half. Our effort was there. We have to find a way to execute in the final third. We had a error in the back and Eastern made us pay for it. Overall, it was a really good performance by our team. We just have to find a way to get the result with it."
The Pioneers started off the offensive action quick, with
Rayne Islas recording a shot in the first five minutes of action.
Zayda Henderson,
Kayla Labra,
Bri Luna, Islas and newcomer Cynthia Lopez each recorded one shot on frame.
The Pioneers defense, anchored by starters Islas,
Dylann Vollaro,
Avery Simmons and
Paige Gross, pressured well and limited the chances of the Greyhounds.
Abby Daniels and Lopez also aided in protecting the Pioneers net on the backline.
While the defense pressured well, Pioneer goalkeeper
Morgan Sherman saw six shots and saved five.
After going down 1-0 in the second half, the Pioneers bounced back and tried to tie the match, recording four shots in the final 16 minutes of action.
In the 87th and 88th minute, TWU hit back-to-back shots on goal, which were narrowly saved by the Greyhounds goalkeeper. The shots by Henderson and Labra looked like they may have been the tying goal, but the ball stayed out of the net.
Despite a battle on a hot day in Texas, TWU fell at home 1-0 to ENMU.
TWU again won the corner kick battle, finding multiple ways to create opportunities. The Pioneers took five corners to the Greyhounds two.
TWU will be back in action on the road this Saturday, Sept. 24 as they take on St. Mary's at 1 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
