TWU SOCCER REACHES LSC SEMIFINALS WITH 3-2 PENALTY SHOOTOUT WIN; FIRST SEMIFINAL APPEARANCE SINCE 2019

DENTON, Texas. (Nov. 12, 2024) – The Texas Woman's soccer team broke their first-round drought with a thrilling 1-1 finish at Pioneer Soccer Park on Tuesday night. TWU (11-3-4, 7-2-3) triumphed over SEU (8-8-3, 6-6-1) in a penalty shootout, winning 3-2. This victory marked the first time since 2019 that the Pioneers advanced to the second round of the LSC Championships.

Amanda Farris sealed the win for the Pioneers with the final penalty kick, following successful attempts by Rachel Ryter and Bailee Radney, along with two remarkable saves by freshman goalkeeper Faith Graves. Ailyn Oliveros scored her first goal of the season in the first half, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead for most of the match.

Despite a late equalizing goal from the Hilltoppers in the second half, TWU managed to secure the victory and advance to the next round.

KEY MOMENTS

  • '11: Freshman goalkeeper Faith Graves made her first start and quickly made an impact with an impressive save in the 11th minute, preventing the Hilltoppers from scoring.

  • '24: Alyssa Valdez delivered a perfect pass to Ailyn Oliveros, and finished with a tough contested shot, putting the Pioneers ahead with an early 1-0 lead.

  • At the end of regulation, the match went into double overtime and ultimately a penalty shootout. 

    • Graves faced six penalty kicks, and made two saves while only allowing two goals.

    • Although the Pioneers experienced three misses at the beginning of the shootout, goals from Radney and Ryter tied the score at 2-2 as they entered the sixth set of shot attempts.

    • After remaining inactive during the full duration of regulation and overtime, Farris stepped up and sealed the victory for the Pioneers, allowing them to advance.

"Despite all the adversity our team faced today, I'm proud of how our team responded and were able to get the result," Head Coach Babak Abouzar said. "Faith stepped up big time in the goal for us and Ailyn had a great goal. It's great to be able to make it to the semis of the LSC Tournament."

NEXT UP
TWU will head to San Angelo, Texas for the second round of the LSC Tournament after advancing on PKs, 3-2 over the Hilltoppers. The Pioneers will take on Dallas Baptist in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
