TWU FINISHES WITH A SEASON HIGH 14 HITS TO DEFEAT ASU

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 28, 2024) - The Texas Woman's softball team finished their 3-game series in dominant fashion against Angelo State on Wednesday, Feb. 28, taking the series 2-1.

TWU (11-8, 9-3) battled ASU (16-6, 7-5) in their series finale in a wind-chilled atmosphere, as the Pioneers defeated the Rambelles 7-1. Head Coach Gay McNutt and her squad were able to bounce back from their game two loss on Tuesday to Angelo State as they finished with a season high 14 hits.

Alyssa LeBlanc (5-2) went seven innings and had 102 total pitches. This game marked the third time LeBlanc threw 100 pitches in a single game as she finished with five strikeouts and allowed two hits on 23 at-bats and 27 batters faced.

TWU started the scoring off in the bottom of the first inning after keeping ASU scoreless in their appearance at bat. Vivica Hernandez made it around the bases to score the Pioneers' first point after a sac fly to center field by LeBlanc to go up 1-0.

Both teams were pretty solid on defense in the next two innings as the score remained 1-0 until Angelo State responded with a score in the fourth. Averie Gunther reached home plate for the Rambelles and tied the game after some singles got past TWU fielders.

The Pioneers picked up their pace on offense as Tylar Lane had an RBI that brought home Hawwa Townsend, who hit a double down the third base line to get things started. TWU headed to the fifth with a 2-1 advantage. The momentum shift stayed with the Pioneers as the bat began to heat up at the plate.

A two RBI double from Ciana Rodriguez in the fifth added to the TWU lead. Rodriguez was one of six Pioneers who finished with two hits on the game as she completed the game with three total RBIs.

LeBlanc went on to keep the Rambelles scoreless in the remaining three innings as the Pioneers had three-run hitting outburst in the sixth to secure their 11th win of the season.

The Pioneers will take a short road trip to Canyon, Texas, on Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, to take on West Texas A&M on March 1-2 before returning to Denton.
