Silver City, New Mexico (April 19, 2024) - In their last doubleheader on the road for the regular season, the Texas Woman's softball team goes 1-1 on Friday, April 19 against Western New Mexico.
TWU (22-27, 20-18) traveled to New Mexico yesterday for their last Lone Star Conference regular season series on the road to take on WNMU (9-36, 6-32) and split the result of the doubleheader. Despite getting on the board first in game one, the Pioneers were unable to capitalize on the early 1-0 lead over the Mustangs who took the win 2-1. TWU responded quickly and dominated game two and took the victory 12-2 with 12 hits. Heading into game three on Saturday, April 20, the series is tied 1-1.
Alyssa LeBlanc (13-11) pitched six innings in game one and was credited with the loss after starting for the Pioneers. Despite taking the loss, LeBlanc recorded one of her best games from the pitching circle. The senior struck out 14 Mustangs of the 23 at bats she faced, a season high strikeouts, and did not allow any walks.
In game one of the series, the Pioneers got on the board first with a solo home run from Delaney Boley in the top of the third inning, the fifth home run of the season for Boley.
After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Mustangs hit two solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and took the win 2-1.
Jaycie Hall (5-8) took the win in game two in only five innings. Hall faced 19 at bats only allowing five hits and striking out seven Mustangs.
The Pioneers flipped the script and had an eventful second game that started with an RBI single from Callie Bailey in the first inning that brought Vivica Hernandez to home plate scoring the first run for TWU.
The Mustangs hit another solo home run to start things off for WNMU in the bottom of the first inning that tied the game up 1-1.
A couple of singles from Makana Morton and Hawwa Townsend collected another couple of RBIs for TWU and put the game 3-1 after the second inning.
After a scoreless third inning, the Pioneers had an eight run lead in the top of the fourth.
A double from Hernandez and three home runs from LeBlanc, Boley and Morton put the Pioneers up 11-1. The Pioneers and the Mustangs added one run each in the fifth inning, but it was not enough for WNMU to cut the lead and continue playing.
TWU took game two of the series in five innings in New Mexico.
The lone game of the series is set to be played tomorrow, Saturday, April 20 at 12 pm (CT).
