KINGSVILLE, Texas (Sept. 19, 2024) – In a five-set thriller, the Texas Woman's volleyball team came back from down two sets to one against Texas A&M - Kingsville to claim their second five-set win of the 2024 season.
TWU (5-3) handed TAMUK (7-3) just their third loss of the season.
After winning set one, 25-17, the Pioneers would fall in sets two and three. Then, they stormed back in set four to win, 25-21, to force a set five.
In their third set five game of the season, the Pioneers came out on fire to take the lead early and never look back, dominating set five 15-8 to win their fifth match of the season.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Myracle Stockman had the hot hand on the night. She finished the match with a career high 19 kills.
- Grace Reynolds dished out a career high 45 assists in the win. She also recorded a career high five kills in the win. Reynolds also added 13 digs to finish with her sixth double-double of the season.
- Malia Viernes recorded her second double-double of the season with a career high 16 digs and 12 kills.
- Marina Obradovic hit a career high nine kills, while also adding a career high two aces from the service line.
- Kady Hansen finished with 16 kills – her second straight match with 15 or more kills. She had zero errors in 23 attacks to hit a career high .696.
- Erin Jones joined Stockman, Viernes and Hansen with double-digit kills, as she ended the match with 12.
- Luna França led TWU in digs with 19 on the night, marking her sixth straight match with 15 or more digs.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
- The Pioneers hit a season high .351 on the night. They outscored TAMUK 93-66 and hit 81 kills to the Javelinas' 57 kills. TWU also owned the net, finishing the night with eight total blocks to TAMUK's three.
- In set one, the Pioneers started out on a roll, opening the match with a 6-1 lead.
- Late in the set, a kill by Stockman opened an 8-0 run for TWU. A kill by Jones to close the run put TWU ahead by 10, 19-9.
- TWU would never trail in set one. Two straight kills by Stockman would close the set in the Pioneers' favor, 25-17.
- In set two, TWU led 15-13 after a kill by Jones. Nevertheless, they gave up a 7-1 run late in the set and could not bounce back, as TAMUK claimed the set two win, 25-18.
- In set three, the score went back-and-forth. TWU led late 16-14 after a TAMUK attack error. However, similar to the second set, TWU gave up a late set run, as the Javelinas took the three-point advantage, 19-16.
- TWU would battle back and take a one-point lead, 21-20, after a TAMUK attack error. Then, after falling behind, a kill by Viernes would tie the set at 22 each, but the Javelinas scored the final three points of the set, 25-22, to take the 2-1 match lead.
- After back-and-forth play for the entirety of the fourth set, the Pioneers found their fight to force the fifth set. TWU had the slight advantage 21-18 after a kill by Obradovic. Then, with a 23-21 advantage, TWU quickly closed it out. A kill from Jones set up set point and Cara Pool ended it in the middle, 25-21.
- Set five was all TWU. After The Javelinas scored the first two points, a kill by Hansen ignited a 6-0 run for TWU.
- After the 6-2 lead, the Pioneers never looked back, only allowing TAMUK to score eight points in the final set. Back-to-back kills by Obradovic set up match point. Then, Hansen hit an explosive kill in the middle to end the set and the match, 15-8, for TWU.
