THE PIONEERS FALL IN HOME OPENER TO THE TIGERS

DENTON, Texas (Sept. 5, 2024) – The Texas Woman's soccer team led the attack against East Central in tonight's matchup, but they could not capitalize on early chances - despite having a 17-9 shot advantage. Two second half goals from the Tigers gave them the edge over the Pioneers as TWU fell to 0-1 to start the season.

TWU (0-1) made multiple attempts at the net with offensive breakaways, but the impressive play from the goalkeeper for ECU (1-0) led them to their first win.

KEY MOMENTS

  • TWU recorded three shots that were saved by ECU's keeper in the first 20 minutes of play.
  • Farris had two saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless heading into the half.
  • Two straight goals (64', 67') for the Tigers allowed them to go up 2-0 early in the second half.
  • The Pioneers produced almost twice the amount of shots as the Tigers (17-9), but the shots on goal differential was only one (7-6), in favor of TWU.
  • One of TWU's best looks on frame can be seen in the first highlight clip off a free kick by Celeste Beltran into the box that narrowly missed the back of the net, after a header by Halee Avery

FROM HEAD COACH BABAK ABOUZAR

"This result is a tough one to take. In the first 20 minutes of the game, we had plenty of chances to put the game away but did not. We allowed ECU to hang around, and that gave them confidence, and that confidence produced goals. We need to be more clinical in front of goal. We do that, it changes the outcome of this game. We will learn from this, focus on recovery, and look to bounce back on Sunday."

NEXT UP
TWU will look to get back on track in their next two away games as they will head to Hal Bodon Field in Joplin, Mo., first to take on Missouri Southern State on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 2. p.m.

Following Sunday's matchup, the Pioneers will battle Southern Nazarene next Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. in Bethany, Okla.
