PIONEERS BATTLE NO. 7 WEST TEXAS A&M; SHUT OUT LADY BUFFS IN GAME TWO

CANYON, Texas (March 2, 2025) – The Texas Woman's University softball team pulled off another top-10 upset on Sunday in Canyon, Texas, shutting out No. 7-ranked West Texas A&M, 4-0, in game two of their doubleheader. The win handed the Lady Buffs their second loss of the season and their first shutout loss of the year. TWU (10-6, 5-5) split the doubleheader with the Lady Buffs, marking their second win over a top-5 opponent this season. The first upset came against current No. 4-ranked Angelo State on Saturday, Feb. 22.

It was all West Texas A&M from the start in game one, as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Buffs continued their strong offensive performance, extending their lead through the first four innings and ultimately defeating the Pioneers 10-0.

However, TWU bounced back with a vengeance in game two. The Pioneers took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first inning, which helped boost their confidence for the remainder of the game. Strong defensive play and stellar pitching by Allison Gonzalez kept the Lady Buffs off the scoreboard for the full seven innings. Malarie Medina capped off the win with a solo home run in the top of the seventh, securing the 4-0 shutout. With the victory, the Pioneers ended a 14-game losing streak against WT, earning their first win over the Lady Buffs since May 12, 2017, when they also shut them out 3-0.
