PIONEERS PREVAIL IN NAILBITER AGAINST DUSTDEVILS IN DOUBLEHEADER

LAREDO, Texas (April 16, 2025) – In a thrilling doubleheader, the Texas Woman's University softball team took on Texas A&M International at Dustdevil Softball Field. The Pioneers (20-22, 16-20 LSC) battled hard, dropping game one by a score of 5-2 before bouncing back for a dramatic 4-3 win in game two against the Dustdevils (23-26, 16-20 LSC).

In the opener, TWU struck first with an RBI single from Hawwa Townsend in the top of the first inning. However, Texas A&M International responded with five runs across the third and fourth, fueled by key hits from its offensive standouts. The Pioneers attempted a rally in the seventh, highlighted by a solo home run from Ashley Allinger, but came up short.

Game two saw Malarie Medina take center stage. Medina launched a three-run home run in the top of the first, scoring Trinity Perry and Townsend to give TWU an early 3-0 lead. The Dustdevils tied it up in the bottom of the second, but the Pioneers remained resilient.

In the sixth, Medina walked and Allinger reached on an error, setting the stage for Cristyna Del Hierro's game-winning RBI double. TWU's defense held strong in the seventh to seal the 4-3 victory.

IMPACT PLAYERS (2 Games)

  • Malarie Medina: 1 home run, 3 RBIs – Her three-run blast set the tone in Game 2.

  • Ashley Allinger: 1 home run, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs – Contributed a solo homer in Game 1 and a clutch double late in Game 2.

  • Marissa Espinoza: 1 double, 1 run scored, and a caught stealing – Made key plays on both sides of the ball.

PIONEER POWER MOMENTS

Game 1: TWU falls 5-2

  • Townsend brought home Vivica Hernandez with an RBI single in the first.

  • Allinger smashed a solo home run to left in the seventh as the Pioneers attempted a comeback.

Game 2: TWU wins 4-3

  • Medina launched a three-run homer in the top of the first to give TWU an early lead.

  • Del Hierro delivered the go-ahead RBI double in the sixth to secure the win.

  • TWU's defense shut down the Dustdevils in the seventh to clinch the split.

Next Up

The Pioneers travel to Kingsville, Texas, to face Texas A&M-Kingsville in a doubleheader on Friday, April 18, at Schaeffer Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., with game two to follow at 2 p.m.
