DENTON, Texas (Oct. 12, 2026) - Texas Woman's graduate defender Alexandra Hughes was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week, earning the honor for the first time in her career. Hughes helped the No. 8-ranked Pioneers extend their winning streak to four matches with a pair of shutout victories.

Hughes played a key role in TWU's wins over UT Permian Basin and Texas A&M International, helping the Pioneers extend their conference lead and record their 12th shutout of the season.

"Lexi brings a lot of composure and experience to our back line, and she understands how to make the most of her opportunities," TWU head coach Babak Abouzar said. "Her ability to help organize us defensively and create chances on set pieces makes her a valuable part of this team."

Hughes helped anchor the Pioneers' defense in a shutout victory over UTPB, holding the Falcons without a shot. She also made an impact offensively in a 2-0 road win over TAMIU, assisting on Whitni Newbill's opening goal off a set piece to give TWU a 1-0 lead.

Hughes finished the week with two shots, including one on goal, while helping lead a defensive unit that has recorded 12 shutouts this season. Her ability to disrupt opposing attacks while contributing to the offensive effort has helped the Pioneers build a 13-1 overall record and a 9-1 mark in Lone Star Conference play.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday, Oct. 14, traveling to Dallas to face No. 1 DBU in a pivotal Lone Star Conference matchup between two of the South Central Region's top teams. TWU enters the contest ranked third in the region, while DBU sits atop the latest NPI rankings.
