Sancet’s four RBI not enough as Pioneers fall twice

CANYON, Texas (Feb. 13) – The TWU softball team dropped a pair of games on the first day of the WT Woodword Invitational in Canyon, TX.  The Pioneers fell to Adams State 9-2, and Colorado State-Pueblo, 10-6.

In their first game of the day against Adams State, the Pioneers fell behind 2-0 in the second inning.  The Grizzlies scored three more runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead.   TWU cut the deficit to three in the bottom of third.  The Pioneers loaded the bases with one out on two singles and an error before sophomore Tori Bice doubled to left center to bring home two runs.

Adams State added to its lead in the fifth.  The Grizzlies sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs to make 9-2.  Four of Adams State's nine runs were unearned after TWU committed three errors. The Pioneers threatened in the sixth, putting two runners on base with one out but a foulout and a strikeout ended the inning.

In the Pioneers' second game, CSU-Pueblo jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  The Pioneers scored a run in the second and one more in the third to tie the score at 2-2.  Senior Sarah Wittenburg drove in the first TWU run on a two out single in the second while senior Kendra Sancet tied the game on a two-out double in the third.

The ThunderWolves regained the lead in the fourth before making it 4-2 in the fifth with an unearned run.  TWU again tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with two runs.  Sancet's second RBI double of the game made it 4-3 and freshman Tylia Sylestine tied the game with a two-out single.

CSU-Pueblo sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth and scored five run to go back on top 9-4.  The ThunderWolves started the inning with three straight singles followed by three consecutive walks and a single.  CSU-Pueblo added another run in the top of the seventh to make it 10-4.  The Pioneers did not go quietly in the seventh as they started the bottom of the inning with four straight hits including a two-RBI double by Sancet.  With runners on first and second, a strikeout, ground out and a foul out ended the game.

"Offensively we played well but our pitching and defense struggled again today," said TWU head coach Genny Stidham.  "We only scored two runs in the first game but we played on a big field and couple fly balls were caught at the fence.  They would have been home runs in lot of fields.  Kendra had a good day at the plate, especially in the second game."

The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, with two more games at the tournament.  TWU will face Chadron State at 11:30 a.m. and Colorado Mesa at 4:00 p.m.
