Softball pounds out 18 hits in two wins at Rattler Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 21) – The TWU softball team pounded out 18 hits and scored 13 runs to pick up two wins on the second day of the Rattler Invitational in San Antonio.  The Pioneers defeated Oklahoma Christian 5-4 before cruising to an 8-2 win over Texas A&M-International.

In their first game of the day, the Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Oklahoma Christian on the strength of three solo home runs.  TWU scored two runs in the first inning on a sacrifices fly by senior Kendra Sancet and a home run by sophomore Tori Bice.  The Pioneers added two more runs in the third on back-to-back long balls by sophomore Nicole Nordie and Sancet.

The Eagles cut the deficit to one run in the top of the fifth inning with three runs including two unearned runs.  OCU knotted the score at 4-4 with a run in the top of the sixth but the Pioneers responded in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.  Senior Sarah Wittenburg's sacrifice fly gave TWU a 5-4 lead.  The Eagles put runners on first and second with no outs but Bice, who started in the circle, retired the next three OCU batters to secure the win.

In their second game, the Pioneers recorded 13 hits and scored eight runs against Texas A&M-International.  After a scoreless first inning, the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a RBI triple by junior Laura Mabary and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Katy Stephens.  TWU sent 11 batters to the plate in the third and scored six runs to make it 8-0.  The Pioneers hit seven singles and a double in the inning.

The Dustdevils scored their two runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run home run.  Junior Bailee Wortham started in the circle for TWU and tossed a complete-game for the win.

"We pitched really well today," said TWU head coach Genny Stidham.  "Tori and Bailee stepped up big in the circle and got us two wins.  We built a nice lead against Oklahoma Christian but gave it up with some defensive miscues.  Our offense came alive in the second game, especially in the third inning.  We picked up couple of good wins in our region and we have another big game tomorrow."

The Pioneers will return to action when they play one game on Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Rattler Invitational.  TWU will face the host #4 St. Mary's at 12:00 p.m.
