DENTON, Texas (Apr. 3)
– TWU sophomore
Alyssa Galaz drove in three runs and helped the Pioneers to a doubleheader spilt and a series win against Cameron. The Pioneers captured the first game of the doubleheader, 7-3, before falling, 11-1, in five innings in the second on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The win today, coupled with a doubleheader sweep of the Aggies on Thursday night, gave TWU the much-needed series win over the #25 team in the nation.
Galaz went 4-for-6 with three RBI, two runs scored, and hit her sixth home run of the season in the second game. TWU freshman
Tylia Sylestine also homered in the first game for her fifth of the year while
Tealey Farquhar, the Pioneers' junior centerfielder, batted 3-for-4 with two runs.
Junior
Bailee Wortham and sophomore
Tori Bice again shared the pitching duties in the circle in game one for the Pioneers. Wortham picked up her fifth win of the season after pitching five innings while Bice recorded her fourth save in two innings of relief.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Pioneers took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Sylestine put TWU on the scoreboard with a two-run shot to center field. The Pioneers added two more unearned runs on a two-RBI single by sophomore
Nicole Nordie.
TWU made it 5-0 in the fourth inning on a RBI single by senior
Kendra Sancet. After another scoreless inning, Cameron scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to make 5-3. The Pioneers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth on single by Galaz. After allowing a single to start the top of the seventh inning, Bice struck out the side to end the game.
In the second game, the Aggies scored seven runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 7-0 lead. Cameron scored all seven runs with two outs on eight straight hits and a bases loaded walk. The Aggies batted around again in the second inning and added four more runs to make it 11-0. The Pioneers scored their lone run on a solo home run by Galaz in the fourth inning.
"I am happy with the split and very happy with the series win against a top-25 team," said TWU head coach
Genny Stidham. "In game one, Bailee and Tori combined to pitch another great game and our offense picked up where they left off yesterday including a big home run by Tylia. Cameron is a good team and they bounced back in game two. We were on defense for a long time in the first two innings and could not get anything going on offense. Alyssa had a great series at the plate and was a tough out to get in all four games."
The Pioneers are now 17-18-1 on the season and 9-6-1 in the Lone Star Conference. TWU will return to action when they travel south to Kingsville, TX, to face Texas A&M-Kingsville in a four-game series on April 10-11.
