DENTON, Texas (Apr. 30)
– For the second straight season, TWU senior first baseman
Kendra Sancet has been named the Lone Star Conference Softball Academic Player of the Year for her excellence on the field and in the classroom.
Sancet was the 2014 LSC Co-Academic Player of the Year last season, sharing the honors with former TWU shortstop
Bailey Vrazel. Sancet's honor this season makes it four years in a row that a Pioneer player has claimed the LSC's top academic award. Vrazel also received the award in 2012 and 2013.
Joining Sancet on the LSC All-Academic Team was teammate and sophomore second baseman
Katy Stephens, Angelo State's Megan Granado and Rachel Moore, Cameron's Sonora Zukerman, Midwestern State's Kelley Schaefer, Tarleton State's Melody Mays and West Texas A&M's Tori Bayer and Allie Cranfill.
Sancet, a mathematics major with a 3.939 cumulative GPA, started all 48 games this season for TWU and leads the LSC in doubles with 20. She is also the Pioneers team leader in home runs (13), RBI (54), slugging percentage (.837), on-base percentage (.534) and is tied for first in batting average (.418). Sancet holds the TWU career records for home runs (55), RBI (222) and grand slams (5). This is the third consecutive LSC All-Academic team selection for her.
Stephens, also a mathematics major, has a 3.760 cumulative grade-point average. She played in all 48 games for TWU while making 47 starts, the majority of them at second base. Stephens has a .295 batting average with 27 RBI, 19 runs, four doubles and three home runs. The LSC All-Academic honor is the first for Stephens in her collegiate career.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
