CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Mar. 19) – The TWU gymnastics team posted a 193.325 and finished third at the 2016 Midwest Independent Conference Championships on Saturday evening at Houck Field House in Cape Girardeau, MO.
Sophomore
Schyler Jones led the Pioneers with two individual titles in all-around and on vault while sophomore
Alyssa Kelly placed second on bars.
Lindenwood captured the team title for the second straight season with a 194.925 while the host Southeast Missouri State finished second with a 194.375. Illinois State came in fourth with a 192.825 followed by Illinois-Chicago with a 191.325 and Centenary with a 188.825.
"I am very proud of the way our team performed tonight," said TWU head coach
Lisa Bowerman. "It was not a perfect meet, but we were able to pick it up after mistakes and avoid counting any falls. Despite some of the scores not showing it, I do feel like it was another step forward for our team. We continue to improve and are looking forward to getting home and training together for national."
The Pioneers received a bye in the opening round and started on bars in the second round. TWU scored a 48.325 led by Kelly with a 9.825 and tied for second overall. Junior
Katie Simpson finished with a 9.775.
The Pioneers then moved to beam in the third rotation and finished with a 48.125 team score. Jones led the team with a 9.750 while sophomore
Taylor Vincent scored a 9.700.
The Pioneers then received another bye before moving to floor in the fifth rotation. TWU posted a 48.850 after four gymnasts scored a 9.750 or higher. Freshman
Erin Alderman led the team with a 9.850 while Jones posted a 9.825, Kelly socred a 9.775 and sophomore
Mallory Moredock finished with a 9.750.
The Pioneers wrapped-up the championships on vault in the sixth rotation and posted a 48.025. Jones was the last vaulter for TWU and she scored a 9.825 to tie for first overall.
Jones also posted a 39.075 in all-around to capture the title.
"Schyler had an incredible night," Bowerman said. "She was spectacular on every event. I am so proud of her and excited that she won vault and all-around."
