About the Pioneers
Prior to this week, TWU's eight matches have all be held within a tournament format so far this season, with the first four coming at home in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic and the final bunch being played at the Florida Southern College/Terrace Hotel Classic in Lakeland, Fla., last week where senior middle blocker
Anna McGee earned All-Tournament Team honors. The Pioneers began the season with two straight wins but are now looking to snap a four-match skid.

Tarleton State opened the 2016 season with six straight wins before falling to Colorado Mesa at home during the Tarleton Invitational. The TexAnns have compiled an overall record of 8-1, including a conference opening win versus Texas A&M-Commerce Friday night.

TWU has doubled up TSU in wins, 30-15, throughout their 42 year-old history. Last season, the TexAnns got the best of the Pioneers by winning a pair of four-set matches.

Makayla Mayfield led the team with 14 kills while senior
Hillary Shaffer added 13 kills and a game-best .414 hitting percentage. Shaffer recorded her 13 kills on 29 attempts and had just one error. Senior

Pioneers drop conference opener to No. 8 Angelo State
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Sept. 16, 2016) - Texas Woman's University volleyball entered Lone Star Conference play at eighth-ranked Angelo State Friday in Stephens Arena at the Junell Center and fell in straight sets to the Belles by scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-18.
ASU (10-1, 1-0 LSC) produced a .310 hitting percentage on the night compared to .056 from TWU (3-6, 0-1 LSC) and served 10 aces at the Pioneers.
Sara Oxford and
Makayla Mayfield tallied team-highs in kills with six each while Oxford,
Briley Cole and
Anna McGee performed well defensively at the net with each registering three blocks.
A kill by McGee in set one pulled TWU to within 8-5, but the Belles pieced together a 5-0 run to pull ahead 13-5 before a block by Cole and McGee ended the skid. Back-to-back kills by Cole and Mayfield slimmed the deficit to 14-8 before ASU completed the set with a 14-8 run.
Mayfield gave TWU its first lead of the evening on an opening kill in set two before the Belles responded with four straight points. A kill by Oxford kept the Pioneers close at 7-4 before the Belles went off with eight consecutive points to jump ahead at 15-3. A block by Oxford and
Katy Ranes ended the run, but TWU was unable to pull any closer than eight points throughout the remainder of the set.
Kills by Mayfield,
Haley Collins and Oxford along with a block by Collins and Oxford brought the Pioneers to within 6-5 in set three after trailing 6-1. Oxford, McGee and Collins each recorded kills for a one-point game before TWU fell behind at 15-11. The Pioneers came back to knot the set at 15-all, but ASU countered with a string of kills of their own to pull ahead 20-16. McGee then added a kill and Cole contributed another for a 22-18 Pioneer deficit, but the Belles wrapped up the match on a trio of kills.
