Pioneers at No. 2 LSU Tigers preview

BATON ROUGE (Jan. 19, 2017) – Texas Woman's University gymnastics travels to No. 2 Louisiana State for a meet Friday at 7:30 p.m. inside Maravich Center.

The Pioneers recorded their first win in 2017 with a defeat of Air Force last weekend at the Denver Quad Meet. The average score for the Pioneers this season sits at a 190.813 with a high of 192.125 occurring at DU. Schyler Jones, the Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 10, leads TWU with an all-round average of 38.463, while Bria Northrop is averaging a 37.787. The Pioneers are ranked 59th nationally following their performance at Denver.
 
About No. 2 LSU (2-0, 2-0 SEC)
The second-ranked Tigers are off to an impressive 2-0 start to the season by posting a pair of the highest team scores in the country with a 197.825 against No.9 Georgia and a 197.575 versus No. 4 Alabama. The Maravich Center has been a welcome home for the squad as the Tigers have won 22 straight meets throughout the past three seasons. Myia Hambrick picked up her second SEC Gymnast of the Week honor in as many weeks for LSU.
 
Series between TWU and LSU
The Tigers hold a 12-0 all-time advantage over the Pioneers dating to the 1999 season. In their most recent meeting, LSU defeated TWU 197.875-193.000 inside Kitty Magee Arena March 12, 2016.

DENTON, Texas (Mar. 12) – The TWU gymnastics posted a season-high on bars and finished with a 193.000 team score in the final home meet of the season against No. 3 LSU, No. 16 Oregon State and New Hampshire.
LSU captured the quad meet with a 197.825 highlighted by Ashleigh Gnat with a perfect 10.000 on floor.  Oregon State placed second with a 196.550 while UNH edged TWU for third with a 193.800.
The Pioneers' lone senior Madison Kremer, who was battling with injuries the entire season, performed on floor as an exhibition to a standing ovation.  She was the final gymnast to perform on the night as all eyes from the 829 fans, gymnasts and coaches were directed to the floor exercise.
TWU opened the meet on vault and scored a 48.525 with three gymnasts posting a 9.700 or higher.  Sophomore Schyler Jones led the team with a 9.800 while freshman Megan Gentry scored a 9.750 and junior Katie Simpson finished with a 9.700.
The Pioneers then moved to bars and posted a season-best 48.400.  Simpson was the team leader with a 9.800 while sophomore Alyssa Kelly, sophomore Taylor Vincent and freshman Jenna Cashmore all finished with a 9.700.
TWU stumbled on beam in the third rotation and scored a 47.850 after counting a fall.  Kelly was the team leader with a 9.800.
The Pioneers finished with a 48.225 on floor in the final rotation.  Jones once again led the team with a 9.800 while freshman Erin Alderman scored a 9.775.
 
Gymnastics defeats Air Force at Denver Quad
DENVER (Jan. 14, 2017) – Bria Northrop led Texas Woman's University gymnastics in the all-around competition at Denver during the Pioneers' second meet of the season by tallying an all-around score of 38.725, increasing her score by nearly two points from the season opener in Arizona last week.
TWU finished third overall with a team score of 192.125. No. 7 Denver finished in first with a 196.350, followed by Arizona State with a 193.275, and Air Force tallied a 189.750 for fourth.
Schyler Jones, the MIC Gymnast of the Week, followed Northrop with an all-around score of 38.275. Jones had steady nine point scores in all four events and took fifth place on vault with a 9.775.
Katie Simpson also competed in the all-around competition, finishing with a 37.725. Simpson recorded a season-high on vault with a 9.725.
The Pioneers started the evening on beam with a strong team score of 47.850. Hunter Vincent took ninth place and led the Pioneers with a 9.750. The team moved to floor exercise for the second rotation to put on a steadfast performance with a team score of 48.025. Erin Alderman recorded a season-high of 9.825 to place fourth while Northrop took ninth with her season-high score of 9.750.
Jones led the squad in the third rotation on vault and placed fifth with a 9.775 as TWU finished with an overall score 48.125. The Pioneers finished strong in the last rotation by posting a 48.125 on uneven bars. Two Pioneers placed in the top 10, with Northrop earning ninth place by scoring a 9.725 and Jenna Cashmore following close behind in 10th with a 9.700.

This will be the second year of the partnership between TWU and FloSports. Last season, FloSports broadcasted three TWU gymnastics meets.
