Pioneers drop two to No. 1 Angelo State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANGELO, Texas (March 25, 2017) - Texas Woman's University dropped a pair of games to top-ranked Angelo State by scores of 4-0 and 7-1 Saturday afternoon at Mayer Field.

No. 1 Angelo State 4, Texas Woman's 0

The Rambelles were able to gain a run in the first without recording a hit. A walk and wild pitch placed a runner on second and was followed by a TWU throwing error. Another walk loaded the bases before Katie Hickey struck out a Rambelle for out number two, but the next batter was hit by a pitch to score a run.

Alexis Elizondo notched the first TWU hit in the top of the second by outrunning the throw to first but was caught stealing second for the third out. A pair of sacrifice bunts by ASU resulted in a score, and a double to left field let in another runner for a 3-0 Rambelle advantage. Back-to-back singles by ASU in the fourth led to a 4-0 lead.

Tara Solomon drew a walk in the top of the sixth, and a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Parnell pushed her to second, but consecutive fly outs ended the inning. In the bottom half, a Pioneer error and wild pitch placed the runner on third before the TWU defense turned a double play to strand the runner.

With one out recorded in the top of the seventh, Hazel Puempel sent a hot shot off the third baseman's glove for a base hit but was caught out at second as Tylia Sylestine made her way to first. An ASU infielder grabbed a foul ball for the third out to end the game.

Hickey (0-1) suffered the loss with two earned runs on three hits, four walks and a strikeout.

No. 1 Angelo State 7, Texas Woman's 1

A ground-rule double in favor of ASU led off the bottom of the first as the ball bounced over the fence right center field. A single up the middle scored the first run, and a double to left field gave the Rambelles a 2-0 lead.

Sylestine made it to first by way of a walk in the top of the second but just missed making it to second and put out as Tori Bice placed a bunt right in front of the plate. Bice was left on first following a pair of outs.

The Rambelles totaled five runs in the bottom of the second beginning with a home run to left field. ASU then registered a single and double followed by two Rambelles being hit by pitches to increase the lead to 4-0. A single up the middle scored two more before a Pioneer throwing error let another run in for a 7-0 advantage.

Bice blasted her third home run of the season with a shot to left center in the top of the fourth to put the Pioneers on the board at 7-1.

Nordie singled through the right side in the top of the sixth, and Katy Stephens placed a single in center to place Nordie on second, but three straight put outs left both runners on base.

Abby Walker (10-5) took the loss with five earned runs on six hits and one walk.

The Pioneers return home to host No. 6 St. Mary's Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. The Texas Rangers mascot, Captain, will be attendance at the games and be available for pictures from 6 to 8 p.m.
