Preview: Pioneers vs. UT Permian Basin and No. 25 West Texas A&M

DENTON, Texas (Jan. 31, 2018) - Texas Woman's University hosts UT Permian Basin Thursday at 7 p.m. and 25th-ranked West Texas A&M Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
About the Pioneers
TWU is currently half a game ahead of UTPB for the eighth and final spot in the LSC tournament. Senior forward Alexis Nezianya leads the team with averages of 11.8 points and 8.5 boards to rank 13th in the Lone Star Conference in scoring and fourth in rebounding, as well as being tied for second in field goal percentage at .455 and fourth in blocks per game with 1.6. Junior guard Bri'anna Gray averages 9.4 points, while senior forward Whitney Apari upped her scoring average to 9.3 following a career-high 21-point output at Angelo State Jan. 27. Junior guard KJ Stastny averages 9.2 points and is ranked seventh in the league in three-pointers made per contest with 1.6.

About UT Permian Basin
The Falcons are fighting along with TWU for a spot in the conference tournament, as this game will place the victor in eighth place in the LSC standings. Khali Pippins-Tyron is seventh in the LSC in scoring at 13.0 ppg, while Sierra LaGrande is second in three-pointers made per game (2.5).
 
History between TWU and UTPB
The teams have squared off just four times, with the first matchup occurring Sept. 6, 2014, with UTPB earning a 58-54 win. The Pioneers have taken victories in the other three meetings.

ODESSA, Texas (Dec. 9, 2017) - All-around play by KJ Stastny and a career game by Grace Mitchell propelled Texas Woman's University to a 78-61 win over UT Permian Basin Saturday afternoon inside UTPB Gym.
Stastny posted 18 points to go along with a career-best eight rebounds and tied a career-high with seven assists for the Pioneers (5-4, 2-2 LSC). Mitchell had her best outing in a TWU uniform with 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting, 15 rebounds and five assists. The Pioneers outrebounded the Falcons (3-7, 2-2 LSC) by 27 while pulling down a season-high 52 rebounds and also posted season-highs by shooting 52-percent from the field and handing out 23 assists on their 32 field goals.

After beginning the season with 14 straight wins, the Lady Buffs went through a rough patch dropping four of five games before rebounding with a pair of victories.  Lexy Hightower's 14.5 ppg is ranked fifth in the LSC, and she is first in field goal percentage at .464. Megan Gamble is tops in assists per game (3.6) and assist/turnover ratio (2.1).
 
History between TWU and WT
Last season's 62-59 Pioneer win over the Lady Buffs at home was the first TWU victory over WT in five seasons. The Lady Buffs have taken the three most recent meetings between the teams, including this season's 81-61 win in Canyon, to give the Lady Buffs a 55-6 all-time advantage.

CANYON, Texas (Dec. 7, 2017) - Cienna Rodriguez scored a season-high 11 points for Texas Woman's University and Whitney Apari added 13 as the Pioneers played No. 4 West Texas A&M close throughout the first half, but the Lady Buffs forced 16 TWU turnovers in the final two quarters in an 81-61 Pioneer loss Thursday night inside First United Bank Center.
TWU (4-4, 1-2 LSC) shot a respectable 46-percent from the field but were slightly outdone by WT's 52-percent performance. The Lady Buffs (9-0, 4-0 LSC) outrebounded the Pioneers 35-to-27 and collected 16 steals against the Pioneers, the most given up by TWU this season, and forced season-high 27 Pioneer turnovers.
