Softball racks up two wins Saturday in Vegas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS (Feb. 3, 2018) - Texas Woman's University took down two opponents at the Desert Stinger Saturday by defeating University of Mary, 10-1, and Nebraska-Kearney, 11-3, at Majestic Park.

Texas Woman's 10, Univ. of Mary 1 (5 inn.)

Morgan McCallum went 3-for-3 at the plate for TWU, and Tylia Sylestine tallied 2-for-2 while Cheyenne Mahy impressed in her Pioneer debut in the circle by limiting the Marauders to a single run.

The Pioneer offense came out strong in the first inning with loaded bases from Mahy, Hazel Puempel, and Tylia Sylestine. A Jordan Kisselburg single brought in Mahy for the first score of the game, and a walk to Marisa Arriaga added another as Puempel made it in. A single to left field by Lindy Kennedy scored Sylestine before a Marauder error brought it Kennedy, Arriaga, and Kissleburg. A double to left field from McCallum scored Sarah LaChance for a 7-0 TWU lead.

Mary scored its lone run in the third on a home run to center field. In the bottom of the frame, Tara Solomon singled to the middle and stole second. McCallum singled up the middle to bring in Solomon for an 8-1 Pioneer advantage.

Puempel broke out a triple in the bottom of the fourth and was able to score on a Marauder error. LaChance doubled up the middle to score pinch runner Kenzie Wilson for the final run of the game.

Mahy (1-0) earned her first collegiate win with one earned run on six hits and four strikeouts.

Texas Woman's 11, Nebraska-Kearney 3 (5 inn.)

Puempel, Wilson, and Avery Williams each collected two hits while Raegyn Parrish notched her first start and win as a Pioneer in the circle.

An RBI single by Puempel in the first scored McCallum for an early 1-0 TWU lead. Wilson and Williams came around in the second inning for a pair of runs and a 3-0 Pioneer advantage.

Puempel led off the fourth inning with a double to right center before scoring on a single up the middle by Marisa Arriaga. A single to left field by Williams then scored Arriaga before a down the left field line by Wilson brought Williams in to put the Pioneers up 6-0. Wilson added another run in the inning on a McCallum single up the middle.

TWU rung up two outs on UNK in the fourth, but a passed ball and two wild pitches attributed to a trio of Kearney runs to cut the Pioneer lead to 7-3. TWU made up for the runs given up by scoring three of their own in the bottom of the frame before adding one more to for an eight-run lead to conclude the game in the top of the fifth.

Parrish (1-0) recorded the victory in 3.2 innings with two earned runs on six hits, three walks and a strikeout.

The Pioneers conclude play in the Desert Stinger Sunday at 4 p.m. CST versus Colorado Christian.
