BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (April 12, 2019) — "It was a night with a lot of ups and downs,"
Lisa Bowerman said following the semifinals of the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships on Friday. Texas Woman's finished fourth in Session 2, posting a 193.225, failing to qualify for tomorrow's final.
Beginning the night with strong showings on Vault and Bars, the Pioneers struggled down the stretch on Beam and Floor.
"I was so proud of them for the way they gave their hearts to the very end," Bowerman said as the reign of the defending two-time national champions came to an end.
Bria Northrop led the way on Vault with a 9.825, tying for first individually, while she and
Hunter Vincent each logged a team-best 9.750 on Bars.
"I think a lot of tonight's meet was very reflective of our season as a whole," Bowerman remarked. "We had a lot of incredible moments, but unfortunately some inconsistency as well that, in the end, did not allow us to move on to the team finals."
In the final two performances of her career,
Erin Alderman added to her legacy, leading the team on Beam and Floor. Her 9.825 on Beam was good for a tie for third individually while her 9.925 on Floor was a career-high, earning her top honors in the meet.
"Erin's career-high was a wonderful way to end the meet," Bowerman said. "She did that routine for her team and she left it all out there for the team."
For the first time in three years, the Pioneers will return home without a national title. Despite falling short, Bowerman expressed what made this season's team special.
"Though it was not the season we expected," she said. "I could not be more-proud of every single one of them."
"They never gave up and fought through every bit of adversity that came their way," she added. "They are the epitome of selflessness and pride for the letters they wear on their leotard."
