DENTON, Texas –
Jasmine Owens, the 2018 College STUNT Association Athlete of the Year, has been named the inaugural head coach of the STUNT program at Texas Woman's University, Director of Athletics
Sandee Mott announced Wednesday.
"I am thrilled to announce Jasmine Owens as the first STUNT Coach at Texas Woman's," said Mott. "She is exactly the leader we were looking for to build a nationally competitive team as she has vast experience as both a former student-athlete and coach. Coach Owens is well respected at all levels in the STUNT world and has the credentials to launch our program on a solid foundation. We are so excited to add STUNT and know it will enhance Pioneer Athletics."
Owens has recently served as an assistant coach at Dallas Baptist, helping the Patriots launch their STUNT program while also working as the Game-Ready Director for Mustang Cheer. Owens served as an NCA Instructor for over five years in NCA's most elite coaching programs, the Speed and Collegiate circuits.
"I am honored for the opportunity to build TWU's STUNT program," said Owens. "I have an incredible passion for the sport of STUNT and I look forward to building a strong foundation for the Pioneer STUNT program to build off of. This has been my dream since I competed at my first STUNT tournament in college. I'm thankful to have the opportunity to coach a sport I love and do it at a university that is focused on empowering women. I plan to build strong, competitive athletes as well as respectful, hardworking women."
During her career at Oklahoma State, Owens was named College STUNT Association Athlete of the Year and was a three-time first-team All-America selection in STUNT and a four-time NCA All-American. During her time at OSU, the Cowgirls captured four national titles in STUNT and three silver medals at NCA College Nationals.
Owens was included in the 2018 Women's Sports Foundation Annual Salute to Women in Sports, and became just the fifth STUNT student-athlete to be recognized.
Created by USA Cheer to be an additional sport option for female athletes, STUNT was derived from traditional cheerleading and developed to fulfill all NCAA emerging sport requirements, and has consistently met all minimum requirements for consideration. STUNT removes the crowd-leading of traditional cheerleading and focuses on the technical and athletic components, which include partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps, and tumbling skills.
