DENTON, Texas (Nov. 17, 2021) –
Sadie Moyer filled the stat sheet with 21 points and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line in Texas Woman's University's 64-72 loss to East Central University Wednesday night at Kitty Magee Arena.
After starting out 2-0 in their opening weekend, TWU (2-1) endured their first loss of 2021 at the hands of a fresh East Central (1-0) team.
In East Central's first game of 2021, redshirt senior Madison Rehl scored 25 points to lead the Tigers to victory.
Moyer topped the Pioneers scoring list with 21.
Ashley Ingram, who provided a spark off the bench, added 15 points, and
Keslyn King rounded out the TWU leaders with eight.
From the jump, Moyer opened the game with an aggressive drive to the basket, drew the foul and sank two free throws to give the Pioneers an early lead. They maintained the positive offensive play throughout the first quarter, closing the quarter with a two-point advantage, 17-15.
East Central responded in the second quarter, leading by as much as 10 at the 2:45 mark. Then, Moyer hit three free throws on the offensive end and
Agang Tac stole the ball on the defensive end to ignite the push for the Pioneers.
Airron Gaydon joined the excitement with a needed three pointer, bringing TWU within two in the waning seconds of the second quarter.
Then, with a free throw from ECU, the Pioneers found themselves trailing by one at the half.
In the third quarter, the Tigers pushed the pace to reclaim the lead. It was not by much for an extended period of time though, because Ingram came off the bench and hit six points in a row, which cut the Pioneers deficit to just two with 1:49 left in the third.
The Tigers lead by as much as 11 in the fourth quarter. Ingram hit a three, cutting it to seven with 1:48 remaining. With time expiring, King drained a three pointer, putting the Pioneers within six. King's basket was TWU's last make of the game, as they fell 64-72.
Tac grabbed the most rebounds for the Pioneers with six, and
Brielle Woods recorded the most assists with four.
Despite the loss, Wednesday night represented another strong performance from the free throw line for the Pioneers, as they 17-18 in the game.
TWU will go on the road for the first time in 2021 for their fourth game of the season. The Pioneers will play Southeastern Oklahoma State University Saturday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. in Durant, OK.
