DENTON, Texas -
Trixie Oche hit a match-best .409 with 10 kills, while both
Kaia Saylor and
Monica Wood added ten kills apiece to lead the Texas Woman's University volleyball team (3-3, 3-3 Lone Star Conference) to a 3-1 win over Texas A&M-Commerce (2-4, 2-4), closing out a two-game sweep over the Lions on Wednesday night inside Kitty Magee Arena.
"Any time we can win back to back matches in the LSC is a big deal," said head coach
Jeff Huebner. "This group is learning and growing so much so fast every day. I love seeing the way our offense is spread out, as well as our day-to-day improvement as a blocking and serving team.
Monica Wood had a terrific series, and
Trixie Oche was incredible today from start to finish."
The Pioneers edged ahead in the early part of the opening set, seizing an 8-5 advantage. The Lions fought back, pulling to within one at 9-8 and 10-9, before claiming a 12-11 advantage. The Pioneers answered and the two teams traded leads down the stretch. The Lions pulled ahead 23-22 on a kill, but the Pioneers claimed the final three points to take the opening set 25-23.
The two teams played closely in the opening points of set number two, but the Pioneers used an 11-2 run to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 17-9 lead. An attack error by the Lions gave TWU set point at 24-17, but A&M-Commerce would not go quietly, holding off three set points before a kill by Oche closed the set at 25-20 and gave TWU a 2-0 match lead.
The third set saw the Lions seize momentum, opening a 12-5 advantage and carry that momentum through the entire set, taking a 25-11 victory to pull to within 2-1.
In set number four, the two teams battled point-for-point until the Pioneers used a 6-0 run to take a 9-8 advantage to 15-8. The Pioneers seemed on track to cruise through the set, but the Lions used a 5-0 run to knot the set at 20-20. TWU scored three of the next four points to take a 23-21 advantage, but TAMUC used back-to-back kills to knot the set at 23-23. However, the Pioneers earned match point on a Wood kill and took advantage of an errant attack by the Lions to claim the match victory.
Bailey Wozniak dished out a match-high 37 assists and added four service aces on the night, while Saylor turned in her fourth double-double of the season, adding 15 digs to go along with her 10 kills.
Sydney Stroh also added 15 kills, while
Tabitha Spray contributed 10. Oche led TWU with five blocks.
The Pioneers were outhit .215 to .179 for the match, a total skewed by TAMUC's nearly flawless offensive performance in the third set that saw the Lions hit .600; however, the Lions hit below .140 in two of the three other sets while the Pioneers hit above .200 in two of the match's four sets.
TWU returns to action on Tuesday, March 2, hosting Dallas Baptist in a 6 p.m. matchup at Kitty Magee Arena.
