DENTON, Texas (Feb. 12, 2022) – Kayla Glover scored a career high 10 points in Texas Woman's University basketball's 53-35 win over Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.
TWU (16-6, 9-2 Lone Star Conference) won their ninth game of Lone Star Conference action in Kitty Magee Arena to move into first place in the conference.
WNMU (5-13, 1-9) struggled to score against the Pioneers defense and dropped their second conference game of the week.
The Pioneers donned their pink uniforms to honor Coach Kay Yow in their annual Play4Kay game against the Mustangs.
"This was a special day for us to honor and celebrate Kay Yow and all of those who have courageously battled cancer," TWU head coach
Beth Jillson said. "They are a true inspiration to us."
Although the Pioneers played a slower pace of game today, they managed to find key moments to increase the pace and score. With key players out, multiple different Pioneers stepped up and made an impact in the win.
Scout Huffman, who got the starting nod for the second time this week, scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the charge for the Pioneers. Huffman utilized her midrange jumper to split the Mustangs defense and give TWU a much-needed spark down the stretch.
From the starting point guard position, Glover scored the first two points of the game for the Pioneers, as TWU opened the game with an 8-0 run. Glover would go on to hit two 3-pointers and go 100% from behind the arc to score a career high 10 points. Glover also added five rebounds and two assists in the win.
Keslyn King, who has been playing in the post position at times, allows the Pioneers to stretch the floor in their smaller line-ups. King's tenacity when driving to the basket ignited the Pioneers throughout the game today. King scored 10 points to stretch her streak of double-digit point games to five. She also grabbed a season high three steals to lead the defensive charge for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers outrebounded WNMU 45-38, with
Brielle Woods grabbing seven, the most boards for TWU.
TWU's bench finished with just five points, but they made a bigger impact on the defensive end of the floor.
Jada Freeman came off the bench and made an immediate difference, by deflecting the Mustangs passes, grabbing two steals and four rebounds.
For the second game in a row,
Airron Gaydon hit a 3-pointer to seal the Pioneers win with one minute left on the clock.
"We came out of halftime with a different mindset and were much more efficient in the second half," Jillson said. "Our defense kept us in the game when we were struggling to finish on the offensive end. Today was another good team win, with everyone on the roster contributing on the box score."
Following the win over WNMU, the Pioneers hosted a free kid's clinic.
"It is always an awesome experience for our athletes to be able to give back and inspire the next generation of players," Jillson said.
TWU goes on the road next week for two more Lone Star Conference games. They are set to play Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas on Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Then, the Pioneers will travel to Kingsville, Texas to play Texas A&M University – Kingsville Feb. 19 at 2:00 p.m.
