Box Score LAREDO, Texas (Feb. 17, 2022) – Ashley Ingram recorded her third career double-double, but the Texas Woman's University basketball team fell to Texas A&M International University on Thursday night, 74-73.
TWU (16-7, 9-3 Lone Star Conference) were plagued by a slow second quarter, which led to the one-point loss to the TAMIU Dustdevils (15-8, 6-6).
The first quarter was fairly even between the two teams with the Dustdevils heading into the second quarter with a four-point advantage. Then, in the second quarter, the Pioneers suffered from a drought in Laredo, scoring only 14 points to TAMIU's 22 points.
Down 43-29 after halftime, TWU jumpstarted their offense and starting chipping away at the deficit on the third quarter.
Kayla Glover hit two free throws to open the third, which kicked off the scoring for the Pioneers. Nevertheless, TWU struggled to limit the explosiveness of TAMIU.
Ma'K'La Woods hit a lay-up to close the quarter and draw the Pioneers within 10 points, 58-48, as they stared down the fourth quarter.
With 10 minutes left in the game, the Pioneers finally got the match to light.
Brielle Woods and
Keslyn King hit back-to-back layups with 5:24 on the clock. King's layup was an and-one opportunity and her good free throw drew the Pioneers within four points, 66-62.
Then, TWU and TAMIU traded baskets within the next minute before the Pioneers went on a 5-0 run. Ingram hit a lay-up with 2:22 left on the clock to knot the score at 69. The Dustdevils responded hitting a 3-point play to take a 72-69 lead with 27 second left in the game.
The Pioneers entered the free throw game to extend the clock, but the clock proved to be the Dustdevils biggest advantage in the fourth quarter.
With 10 seconds left and down by four, the Pioneers inbounded the ball and
Sadie Moyer hit her only 3-pointer of the game to give TWU the chance.
Moyer's 3-pointer forced TAMIU to call the timeout. After the timeout,
Brielle Woods stole the ball from the Dustdevils, but TWU could not get the winning basket.
Despite scoring a game high 25 points in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers dropped just their third LSC game of the season to TAMIU.
Ingram led the Pioneers with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Brielle Woods packed the stat sheet—scoring 15 points, grabbing four rebounds, and adding four assists and five steals.
Scout Huffman finished with 13 points on three-of-four 3-point shooting. Moyer added 11,
Ma'K'La Woods and King both finshed with 7 points.
Glover tied her career high in assists with five in tonight's game.
The Pioneers stay on the road for their next game on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2:00 p.m. against Texas A&M University – Kingsville.
