DENVER, Colorado (August 27, 2022) – Sophomore
Dylann Vollaro scored her first career goal, as the Texas Woman's soccer team tied Regis University 1-1.
TWU (0-1-1) bounced back after their 4-0 loss to Colorado School of Mines on Thursday, August 27 to end in a tie with Regis on Saturday.
"We bounced back really well in today's game," TWU head coach
Babak Abouzar said. "Not the result we wanted, but I am super proud of how our team dug in and created some quality chances. We are improving in this young season. I am very excited for Dylann to get her first collegiate goal. She deserved it. We look forward to getting back to Denton, getting some much needed rest and focusing on a good Oklahoma Baptist team on Thursday in front of our home fans."
From the kickoff, the Pioneers played with more deliberate pace. They pushed their offensive attack, especially down the sides. TWU also managed to play the free kicks well, putting themselves in good situations to find the back of the net.
The Pioneers set the tone early, knotting their first goal of the 2022 season at the 13-minute mark. TWU moved the ball from their defensive end of the field to start the attack.
Freshman
Bri Luna controlled the ball down the left side of the field, before finding Vollaro who was making a run in the center of the field. Vollaro struck the ball at the top of the 18, hitting the top left corner of the net for her first career collegiate goal. The assist from Luna marked her first career assist.
After scoring, the Pioneers played with solid intensity, defending the Rangers speed of attack. In the first half, TWU only allowed eight shots.
While TWU lead at halftime 1-0, the Rangers returned from the break looking for the equalizer.
The Pioneers defended strong, until Regis broke down the back line and narrowly slipped the ball past the hands of TWU's goalkeeper,
Morgan Sherman, at the 67-minute mark.
In the next 23 minutes, TWU recorded two more shots but were unable to find the go-ahead goal.
TWU recorded 18 total shots, 10 of which were on goal. Vollaro led the way with three shots on frame.
Starting goalkeeper Sherman finished with six saves, including back-to-back close saves in the second half.
The Pioneers return to Denton for their home opener on Thursday, Sept 1 against Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m.
