TWU GYMNASTICS SET FOR SEASON OPENER IN DENVER

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 6, 2023) – In two short days, the Texas Woman's gymnastics team will officially begin their 2023 season.

After a much anticipated preseason, the Pioneers will start the 2023 season on the road at the University of Denver on Sunday, Jan. 8.

TWU finished last season atop the leaderboard in every category, winning the Midwest Independent Conference Championship, the USAG National title and the honor of national academic champions. While the season is a long journey, the first step to achieving their dreams begins on Sunday.

The Pioneers will compete in a tri-meet hosted by Denver on Sunday, which will feature TWU, Denver and Penn State.

LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED
  • SEASON OPENER: Last season, in their opening meet at Florida, the Pioneers set a new program record for highest team score in a season opener: 193.700. In their final meet of the 2022 season, at USAG Nationals, the Pioneers scored a 196.025. TWU will look to set the tone early this season in their opening meet.
  • LINEUP LOOK: TWU returned six All-Americans from last season: Daisy Woodring on vault, MacKenzie Kunzman on beam, Mara Johnson on floor, Maddie Griffith on bars and Sierra Muns on floor. The Pioneers have seven seniors this year, two juniors, five sophomores and three freshmen. Everyone is poised to make an impact this season.
  • HISTORY CHECK: TWU last faced Penn State on March 9, 2018 in a quad meet hosted by Brigham Young University. The Pioneers scored a 194.925, while Penn State scored a 196.675 to win the meet. TWU also met Penn State on Feb. 19, 2017 at home in Kitty Magee Arena in a quad meet featuring Penn State, Western Michigan and Sacramento State. The Pioneers scored a 196.000 and Penn State scored a 194.550. When it comes to the other Pioneers, Denver, TWU has faced them seven times, all on the road. Most recently, in 2021, TWU met Denver in Norman, Okla., where TWU scored a 193.650 and Denver scored a 196.875. TWU has not traveled to Denver since 2019.
