DENTON, Texas (August 22, 2023) – The Texas Woman's gymnastics team welcomes Kyana George to their coaching staff as a Coach's Assistant, Head Coach
Lisa Bowerman announced Tuesday.
George, a decorated college gymnast at the University of California, Berkeley, joins the Pioneers with not only experience as a student-athlete, but also experience coaching gymnastics collegiately. Most recently, George served as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the University of Alabama Women's Gymnastics team.
"I could not be more excited to have Kyana join our staff," Bowerman said. "She brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and a new perspective to our program. From our first conversation, I knew Kyana would bring a spark that will help this program reach new heights. I have no doubt her impact will be felt immediately."
As a gymnast at the University of California, Berkeley, George earned a varsity letter as a freshman and continued to excel throughout her collegiate career. She was a two-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in 2018 and a four-time Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week in 2020 and 2021. In 2020, she earned multiple postseason accolades, including Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Regular Season All-Around Second Team All-American, All-Pac-12 First Team in All-Around and on Vault and All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention on Balance Beam. During her senior year in 2021, George continued to shine. She was the 2021 Pac-12 Floor Champion and the Regional Floor Champion. Following the season, she was named the Regional Gymnast of the Year, an AAI Award Top 6 Finalist and an NCAA Woman of the Year Nominee. Additionally, she earned postseason accolades both in conference and on the national stage, being named a WCGA Regular Season Second Team All-American on Floor, a National Championship First Team All-American on Beam, All-Pac 12 First Team in All-Around, Beam and Floor and earning All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention on Vault.
While competing as a gymnast, George also enjoyed serving her community at the local senior center and through mentoring programs. She also held leadership positions in the Cal Sports Marketing Club, on the Cal Racial Justice Council and on the Cal Golden Bear Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
George earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley in 2021 and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health, also from the University of California, Berkeley.
After graduating, George served in roles with Cal Athletics Marketing, as a Marketing Team Member, and as a Family Counselor at Alternative Family Services, before transitioning to coach at the University of Alabama. Along with coaching, George also worked as a Registered Behavior Technician at Early Autism Services in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
As the Volunteer Assistant with the Crimson Tide, George served as the Assistant Floor Coach, Choreographer and Floor Music Composer. She helped guide the Crimson Tide to the sixth-highest National Qualifying Score in the nation on floor. She also assisted in coaching beam, vault and bars, oversaw the student managers and assisted with recruiting. During this time, she also continued to grow her knowledge of the NCAA rules surrounding gymnastics, recruiting and competition. Through it all, she aided the coaching staff in providing a positive, supportive and collaborative culture.
