WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Sept. 20, 2023) - The Texas Woman's soccer team out shot Midwestern State but was unable to find the back of the net. MSU held on to a 1-0 lead which came in the 23rd minute of the match.
TWU (5-1-1) controlled the offensive attack for the majority of the game and owned the ball in the Mustangs' half of the field, nonetheless, MSU (4-1-2) was able to capitalize on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute and get a result on their first Lone Star Conference game.
"It was an unfortunate result tonight," TWU Head coach Babak Abouzar said. "We played a really good game and did a great job of limiting their opportunities while creating a lot of chances to win it. We just have to work on executing in the final third. I always tell the team we can't get too high in our highs or too low in our lows, and this is a game where we all have to live that. We will learn from tonight and move on."
Despite allowing one goal against MSU, Amanda Farris still leads the LSC in goals against average (.291), saves (.909) and shutouts per game (.571).
The game had an even start with five shots total in the first 16 minutes, three for TWU and two for MSU. Celeste Beltran had the first shot for the Pioneers in the sixth minute, and Alyssa Striker added the other two for TWU.
In the 22nd minute, the Mustangs had a long shot into the box that landed on Lexi Beck's feet, who intended to make a run to the left side of the box but was knocked down by a Pioneer. A penalty kick was called, and Beck took the shot from the penalty point. Farris guessed the direction of the shot and dove to the bottom left of the goal, but she was unable to get a hand on the ball. The Mustangs took the 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers dominated the second half of the game. They recorded a total of 15 shots- eight of those on goal. Arianna Arboleda had a few golden opportunities in the 61st, 67th and 80th minutes that were blocked and off the top of the goal post.
Bri Luna and Striker also recorded a couple of shots each.
Striker led the Pioneers on shots and shots on goal with four and three respectively. These stats also place her in fourth in shots in the LSC with four and tied for first in the LSC for shots on goal (13) with Lexi De La Cruz from Lubbock Christian.
The Pioneers return home and will look to record their first LSC win on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. against St. Edward's at Pioneer Soccer Park.
