CANYON, Texas (Jan. 25, 2024) – The Texas Woman's basketball team starts their road trip tonight against West Texas A&M in their 12th Lone Star Conference contest of the season.
TWU (16-3, 10-1) will meet WT (10-8, 5-5) on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. at the First United Bank Center.
Last week, the Pioneers defeated Texas A&M – Kingsville and Texas A&M International at home in Kitty Magee Arena – they won by an average margin of 12 points. In their LSC contests last week, the Lady Buffs defeated Western New Mexico on the road, 69-62, and fell to Eastern New Mexico by one point, 71-70, on the road.
Ashley Ingram was also named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week after her impressive offensive stat line last week, averaging a double-double – 24 points and 10 rebounds over the two wins.
TWU will look to claim their 11th LSC win of the season and 17th overall win.
ROAD TRIP
TRIPLE THREAT
- CRASH THE BOARDS: Currently, TWU grabs 36.5 rebounds per game. On the other side, WT averages 35.8 rebounds per game. Ingram ranks fifth in the LSC in rebounds, averaging 8.6 rebounds per game. The top rebounder for the Lady Buffs is Nyalam Thabach, who ranks eighth in the LSC with 7.7 rebounds per game.
- HISTORY WITH THE LADY BUFFS: While WT and TWU have met 71 times, the Pioneers have only won eight of those meetings. They have not beaten the Lady Buffs in Canyon since WT was known as West Texas State back in 1981. Last season, the two teams met in Denton, Texas, and the Pioneers won the meeting 62-52. Of the returners, Ingram led TWU with 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Ariyanna Hines also scored nine points in the win.
- THEY'RE FREE: Free throws will be key in Thursday night's game. The Pioneers rank 16th in NCAA Division II in free throw attempts per game, taking 22.68 per game. WT takes 14.5 free throws per game. In the LSC, Ingram ranks seventh in free throw percentage, shooting 81.1% from the charity stripe. WT's Hollie Stadler ranks just above Ingram in sixth in the LSC with a 84.4% free throw percentage. As a team, the Pioneers average 75.2% from the free throw line, which ranks fifth in the LSC.
