NORTON, Mass (Jan. 29, 2024) – The Texas Woman's artistic swimming made a big splash, dominated the dual against the Wheaton Lyons on Saturday, Jan. 29 and had massive score improvements from last weekend. TWU took the victory over the host 85-66.
Makayla Crichton and Maya Schwickert lead the Pioneers in the duet and trio events placing first in both events. They scored over 50 points more in both routines compared to last weekend.
In the duet event, Crichton and Schwickert improved 48.95 points from when they placed third at the home dual against Stanford and took home the first place.
Schwichert, who won the 2023 US National Championship in the solo event in the senior category, debuted her solo in Norton, Massachusetts. This is Schwichert's first time swimming this event at the collegiate level. The freshman from Scottsdale, Arizona placed in the top three of the solos at the competition.
The pair joined sophomore Candela Fidalgo Garcia in the trio event and got the highest score of that event showing a 64 points improvement from their first competition. The Pioneers also placed second in the trio event with juniors Anaya Kashikar, Laura Klein Paredes and Haiden Long.
Fidalgo, who swam a beautiful and base mark free solo routine to the song entitled "Falling Apart" by Michael Schutle, had a score 67.94 points higher from her debut last weekend. Fidalgo Garcia earned the highest score of the entire competition.
TWU also captured third place in the duet category with the pair from Guadalajara, Spain. Sophomore Eva Fernández-Montenegro Serrano and first year Maria Fernández-Montenegro Serrano earned a score 37 points higher than last weekend.
In the team event, the Pioneers also showed incredible improvement and earned their highest score in this event so far this season. Sophomore Ada Monteys Vinardell, Kashikar, Klein Paredes, Long, Eva Fernández-Montenegro Serrano, Maria Fernández-Montenegro Serrano grouped to win the team routine for the Pioneers. Wheaton's team entry of six swimmers tallied a total of 141.4188 points to place second.
Saturday's result, which showed a massive improvement, gives TWU great momentum. This young team will continue to perfect their routines and show their fun, energetic and artistic routines to the artistic swimming collegiate community.
The Pioneers return to the pool on Saturday, Feb. 10 when they host The Ohio State at 3:30 p.m. in Pioneer Hall. This will be the last dual meet of the season for TWU.
