ANOTHER SHUTOUT LEADS TO A HOME CONFERENCE WIN FOR THE PIONEERS

DENTON, Texas. (Oct. 16, 2024) – The Texas Woman's soccer team secured their first home conference win of the season by shutting out Eastern New Mexico 2-0 on Wednesday night. TWU (6-2-3, 2-1-3) defeated ENMU (2-8-1,1-6-0) with two second half scores from Giselle Gutierrez and Cadence Andersen. Gutierrez picked up her fourth goal of the season as Andersen headed in the insurance goal for her first collegiate score.

Gutierrez picked up her fourth season goal as Andersen scored the insurance goal for her first collegiate one. This win improved the Pioneers' home record to 2-1-2 and the 17th all-time win over the Greyhounds.

  • The Pioneers started their attack early with two shots from Alyssa Striker in the first 15 minutes of play.

  • '30: Amanda Farris secured her first save after a Greyhound shot into the box to test the senior goalkeeper.

  • '60: TWU came out with a fierce attacking approach and picked up the pace as they had seven shots (four SOG) to start the half. 

  • '69: Giselle Gutierrez popped off the lid with the first score in three games for TWU after a service entry into the box from Celeste Beltran

  • '82: The attacking surge by Texas Woman's was not done as Cadence Andersen capped off a successful night with her first career goal scored on a header from a cross by Alyssa Valdez to make the game 2-0 in the final minutes of play.

"I am proud of our team for getting our first home conference win," Head Coach Babak Abouzar said. "I was very impressed with our response in the second half after a rough first half. Celeste had a great service into Giselle, and AV played a nice left footed service to Cadence for her first goal. In addition, we got our fourth straight shutout of the season."
 

NEXT UP

TWU will hit the road again for a two game road trip against St. Mary's and DBU starting this Saturday, Oct. 19. The Pioneers will first take on the Rattlers in San Antonio, Texas, at 1 p.m., and then head back up north to Dallas for a battle with the Patriots at the Patriot Soccer Field at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
