TWU RECORDS HIGHEST MARGIN OF VICTORY OF THE SEASON IN WIN OVER STMU

DENTON, Texas (Feb, 10, 2024) – Propelled by a stellar offensive display, the Texas Woman's basketball team scored their second most points of the season and had four players score in double-figures on their way to a dominant, 85-53, win over St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon.

No. 9 TWU (22-3, 16-1) recorded their highest margin of victory of the 2023-24 season with their 32-point victory over StMU (4-18, 4-12). It marked the Pioneers' second 30-plus victory this season, as they defeated MSU Denver on Nov. 11, 2023 by 30. Additionally, the win continued the streak for the Pioneers - they are on a 12-game win streak, all 12 which they have won by 10 or more points.

Not only was there the win to celebrate, but the Pioneers also donned their pink jerseys today to raise awareness for Play4Kay, which is a movement started by Coach Kay Yow, former NC State basketball coach who battled breast cancer. Today represented more than just playing in pink jerseys, rather the jersey stood as a symbol of those who have battled breast cancer and to raise awareness.

During the game, TWU honored three women, who are warriors, as honorary starters who have fought and survived breast cancer. To learn more about the Play4Kay Iniative and Coach Kay Yow, visit https://kayyow.com/play4kay/.

After celebrating their honorary starters, the Pioneers got off to a strong offensive start, scoring 22 points in the opening quarter of action. In the first quarter, St. Mary's matched their scoring with 19 points to make it a close contest after 10 minutes of action.

However, TWU turned their scoring and defense heat index up, and the Rattlers cooled way down.

Following the first quarter, the Pioneers went on a 48-15 run over the next two quarters to take a decisive lead. TWU held StMU to six points in the second quarter and nine points in the third quarter, marking the 15th and 16th quarters this season that the Pioneers have held their opponents to less than 10 in a quarter.

In the win, four Pioneers finished in double-digits. Ashley Ingram led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the field, 1-2 from three and 8-10 from the free throw line. Ingram currently averages 62.8% from the field, which ranks first in the Lone Star Conference.

Scout Huffman added 14 points on 6-of-8 from the field, and Averee Kleinhans recorded a perfect day, going 4-of-4 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free throw line to finish with 13 points. Ariyanna Hines finished with 10 points on the day to help lead TWU to the win.

The Pioneers' success on offense came from sharing the wealth. As a team, TWU dished out 17 assists. Kleinhans led the way in displaying her stellar court vision with a season high seven assists. Hines dished out three assists, and Huffman added two to help lead the Pioneers.

TWU dominated the points in the paint battle, scoring 46 points in the paint to StMU's 20.

The Pioneers protected the rock tonight, only turning the ball over eight times. They forced the Rattlers to turn the ball over 20 times, which marked the ninth time this season TWU has forced an opponent to turn the ball over 20 times or more. TWU scored 27 points off those 20 turnovers as well.

Everyone made an impact in the win tonight, as the bench production was huge – the Pioneer's bench contributed 32 points in the win.

After the tight first quarter, it was all gas and no brakes for the Pioneers. TWU found their first double-digit lead of the game with 3:14 remaining in the second quarter. A layup by Kleinhans off the Huffman assist put TWU up by 11, 36-25.

While the Pioneers kept scoring, the Rattlers did not. TWU locked down on defense. After scoring at 4:18 on the clock in the third quarter, StMU would not score another basket until the sixth minute of the third quarter.

During the long drought, TWU scored 27 straight points.

Ingram gave the Pioneers their first 30-point lead of the night at the seven-minute mark of the third quarter off a successful and-one opportunity to increase the lead to 55-25.

The Pioneers would find their largest lead of the afternoon twice in the fourth quarter at 38 points.

To open the fourth quarter, Huffman scored a layup to hit the 38-mark, 72-34. Then, with five minutes left in the game, Avery McConnell scored a layup to push the lead back to 38, 77-39.

Hines would score the final bucket of the game for TWU to send the Pioneers out with the 85-51 victory.

"Play4Kay is always a powerful day," TWU Head Coach Beth Jillson said. "It is incredible to recognize our cancer warriors who are family members and dear friends. I am proud of our team today. Our bench production was a massive reason why we were able to maintain high energy throughout all 40 minutes of the game. It was a great day at home, and we are looking forward to more opportunities on the road next week."

The Pioneers currently hold the No.1 spot in the LSC and rank ninth on the WBCA National Poll. They go on the road next week to face Texas A&M International on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
