yDURANT, Oklahoma (March 20, 2024) - The Texas Woman's softball team dropped midweek non-conference doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma.
After a scoreless first inning, TWU (16-19, 14-10) took the 2-0 lead of game one with a double RBI home run from Piper Morton, her first one of the season. Makana Morton, who had walked the turn just before her sister Piper and her made the run around the diamond to give the Pioneers the first two runs of the game.
In the top of the third inning, SE (16-13, 8-6) cut the lead to one with an unearned run after a wild pitch from Jaycie Hall, who started pitching for the Pioneers and pitched the first five innings of the first game.
TWU added another two runs in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 4-1 from a double RBI from Callie Ballie who helped Piper Morton and Lauryn Davies scored with a single down the right field line.
Southeastern responded quickly and scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to tie things up.
The game remained even until the bottom of the seventh when SE scored the last run to take the game 5-4 over the Pioneers.
Hall pitched the first five innings of the game but Allison Gonzalez (3-1), who came in later in the game took the loss for the Pioneers.
Southeastern Oklahoma started game two with the same momentum and got on the board quickly in the bottom of the second inning. They scored three in the bottom of the second and the third, and the final run in the bottom of the fourth.
Janyssa Ramos (1-3) and Alyssa LeBlanc pitched three innings each but Ramos took the loss. Ramos faced 19 at bats and struck out three while LeBlanc faced 12 and struck out half of those.
After today's doubleheader the Pioneers continued to be ninth on the Lone Star Conference standings.
After a full week rest, the Pioneers will return to Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma Christian on Thursday and Friday, March 28-29. OCU is currently one spot above the Pioneers in the conference standings, so next week games are crucial as the teams are now past the halfway mark of the season.
TWU will return home on April 5 and 6 to face St. Mary's who currently ranks third at Dianne Baker Field.
