TWU DEFEATS UTPB IN FIVE INNINGS AND TAKES THE SERIES

DENTON, Texas (March 9, 2024) - A clean sweep at home for the Pioneers who defeated Texas Permian Basin 8-0 in the lone game of the series at home.

After 2-0 and 8-0 wins during the doubleheader on Friday, March 8, TWU (14-13, 12-6) recorded another win against UTPB (4-20, 1-14) this afternoon at Dianne Baker Field.

Today's win ranks the Pioneers fourth in the Lone Star Conference standing just behind West Texas A&M, St. Mary's and TWU's next opponent, UT Tyler.

Alyssa LeBlanc (7-5) went all five innings and faced 16 batters while striking six of them out and only allowing three hits. LeBlanc continues to lead the LSC in several categories including batters struck out (98), batter SO looking (41) and home runs allowed (1). Leblanc also ranks second in innings pitched (78.1) and fourth in opposing batting average (.186).

The senior also showcased solid offensive skills while at bat. LeBlanc recorded two hits in three opportunities at bat, scored one run and collected a pair of RBIs.

The Pioneers opened up the run count early in the bottom of the first inning where they collected four hits and three runs.

Ciana Rodriguez reached first on a fielder's choice to shortstop right before LeBlanc walked, leaving Pioneers on first and second base. A double to left center from Tylar Lane allowed Rodriguez to score and advanced LeBlanc to third.

A single to the pitcher and two RBIs from Hawwa Townsend brought home Lane and LeBlanc to close off the first inning with the 3-0 lead over the Falcons.

After an uneventful second inning, the Pioneers added their fourth run on the bottom of the third inning. With bases loaded for the Pioneers with Lane, Townsend and Makana Morton, Delaney Boley was grounded out.

The last four runs for the Pioneers came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Single RBIs from Callie Bailey and Rodriguez added to the TWU lead. With bases full, LeBlanc hit a single up the middle and collected the final two RBIs of the game to send Bailey and Hernandez home.

LeBlanc was one of four Pioneers that recorded two hits alongside Rodriguez, Townsend and Morton. Bailey, Lane and Boley had one each.

TWU's catcher, Boley, ranks second in the LSC putout standings with 145 thus far, and just one behind Kaylynne Ruiz from Texas A&M Kingsville.

The Pioneers will now go on the road to face UT Tyler on Tuesday and Wednesday March 12 and 13. TWU will return to Dianne Baker Field on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. for the conference series against Midwestern State, who currently ranks 14 in the LSC.
