STRONG SUNDAY PUSH LIFTS PIONEERS TO 3-1 WEEKEND AT DIANNE BAKER FIELD

DENTON, Texas (March 16, 2026) - The Texas Woman's Softball team captured a 3-1 weekend against Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico, using a late offensive surge on Sunday to close out the series. TWU opened with a 9-0 win over Sul Ross on Friday before dropping a 7-2 loss in the second game. On Sunday, the Pioneers rebounded with a 10-2 run-rule victory in game one against WNMU and followed it with a 7-4 win to cap off the weekend.

After the weekend, TWU sits at 13-13 overall, 10-6 in conference, Sul Ross fell to 3-18, 1-13, and WNMU is now 12-14, 8-8. Offense and pitching were both key for the Pioneers, who overcame windy, chilly conditions on Sunday to secure the series victories. Timely hitting, aggressive base running, and clutch pitching performances highlighted the team's balanced effort across all four games.

Key contributions came from Randi Crawford, who delivered strong outings in her Friday and Sunday wins, keeping opponents off balance. Tamia Cherry provided timely hitting with multiple RBIs across both WNMU games, while Hawwa Townsend and Elizabeth Smith added clutch hits and scoring opportunities that fueled the Pioneer rallies.

Game 1 vs. Sul Ross (TWU won 9-0, 5 innings)

  • TWU jumped ahead early, scoring six runs in the third inning to break the game open.

  • Cherry and Espinoza delivered key RBI hits while Townsend added extra-base hits to extend the lead.

  • The Pioneers added three more runs in the fourth inning to complete the run-rule win.

Game 2 vs. Sul Ross (TWU loss 2-7)

  • TWU scored two early runs after a Espinoza 2 RBI single, but the Pioneers couldn't keep the momentum going at the plate and fell 7-2 in game two.

Game 1 vs. WNMU (TWU won 10-2, 5 innings)

  • In the first inning, the Pioneers capitalized early on the Mustangs' mistakes and took a 4-0 lead after a RBI single from Riley Todd.

  • In the second, Townsend and Smith each delivered RBI doubles, giving TWU a 7-0 advantage.

  • TWU added 3 more runs in the third, capped by Cherry, Townsend, and Lux run-scoring hits for the 10-2 run-rule win.

Game 2 vs. WNMU (TWU won 7-4)

  • Townsend got the Pioneers started with an RBI ground out in the third to tie the game 1-1.

  • Cherry doubled home the tying run in the fifth, followed by Townsend's RBI single and a string of RBIs from Lux, Perry, Medina, and Todd to take a 6-2 lead.

  • Townsend's RBI ground out in the sixth extended the advantage to 7-2, holding on for the 7-4 win.
